APEX Timber Tour - How did we do?

This past month the Silver Star Freestyle Athletes were off to Apex Mountain for the first of 3 stops in the BC Freestyle Provincial Timber Tour/Super Youth Competitions. We really don’t know where to start with the results – this Club is talented, they cleaned up and are loaded down with neck candy! 9 Gold Medals, 11 Silver Medals and 4 Bronze….but who’s counting. The number one goal was to have fun and that they did. Under beautiful skies these kids hucked big air, threw down some serious slopestyle runs and were unbelievable in the moguls.
Naming these tricks is a sport in itself, we really need to work on a glossary. Getting the lingo down is one thing but understanding what it means and comprehending how many turns in a spin,is it off axis etc etc etc it's confusing to us parents!

In the U18’s Max Fenn was 1st in Big Air with his sweet Switch 9 followed closely by Hayden Broderick showing off his mad park skills nailing his Rodeo 5 and coming in 2nd. Landon Gordon cranked out a killer slope run landing him in 2nd for U18’s.
Have you ever heard of a Rodeo 9? That’s how Stirling Peters U16 category ended up 1st in Big Air. His buddy Liam Westermann pulled off unbelievable runs through the park in Slope and Big Air where he spun a Bio 9 to give him a double silver finish. Liam Collyer had all eyes when he threw down a 3rd place finish with a Bio 7 truck driver in the slope course. Nicholas Suchy wore an oven mitt over his wrist cast to pull off a 5th place finish on the Slope course, but it was his Switch Rodeo 10 at Big Air that caught the crowd’s attention. U14 Timber Tour athlete Caden Danbrook placed 5th in both Slope and Big Air spinning a Cork 7.
Female athlete Jamie Rykuiter in the U16 category, originally from Silver Star but now skiing with the BC Development Mogul Team pulled out a 2nd place finish with her spins off the mogul jumps.
The Silver Star boys in the U14 category dominated their age group with a Clean Sweep on the podium in each event. Jarvis Jurome took home one of each colour coming in 1st in Big Air, 2nd in Moguls and 3rd in Slopestyle, while good friend Alex Collyer rocked the stage with two gold medals in Slopestyle & Moguls and a bronze in Big Air. The third in the winning trio was Evan Bush, taking home 2 Silver Medals in Slopestyle & Big Air and a Bronze in Moguls. Keaton Dick was close behind with a 4th in Moguls and 5th in Big Air & Slope. Our very own Jordan MacDonald owned the podium with a 1st place spot in all three events in the girls U14.
A gold medal now hangs around Mason Land’s neck for stomping his 540 in Slopestyle for the U12 boys. The same goes for Alex Sewell who pulled off a sick 360 in his U10 Slopestyle run.
In their first competition, Mason Swanson and Anderson Bicknell upset the veterans by stealing 2nd and 4th place positions, respectively in the U10 Big Air. Mason Swanson went on to take another 4th place finish in moguls to start his freestyle ski medal collection.
Keeping it all in the family, although different age categories, the Silver spotlight was on Hayden & Liam Person. Hayden U16 from Silver Star now skis with the BC Moguls Team. Hayden and his younger brother Liam U10 dominated the mogul field.
There was so much action in just a few days it was hard to keep track of it all. We would like to thank the parents and give them all honourable mention for volunteering through the weekend. They seemed to be working equally as hard on the hill as they were on the dance floor boogying to Vernon’s Band “Young Un’s”. It was a good time had by all!
January’s a big month, still to come…… the Freeski Team is off to Whitewater in Nelson for the Junior Smith Optic Freeski Open and the Freestyle Gang is heading to Whistler for the second Timber Tour/Super Youth stop. Good luck to everyone and congratulations on such great finishes.

On Scene with Shaw TV - SSFSC is going to be famous..wait a minute - we already are!

Stirling Peters was the main attraction this weekend for Shaw TV. They came looking for Stirling after noticing his recent results at Apex Mountain, coming 1st in Big Air with a Rodeo 9 and in 6th in Slopestyle. Watch his video below.

Yep....Wade has outdone himself by finding a wicked location and building an awesome course. This year we are thrilled to be able to build a course that will host both the Timber Tour Mogul athletes as well as the Super Youth Athletes.
Every mogul course has an upper and lower set of jumps. You'll notice we have 4 jumps on each landing (upper and lower), Two of the four jumps on each landing will be used for Timber Tour (older kids) and be more challenging while the other 2 jumps on each landing will be for Super Youth (younger kids) and provide a safe jump for the younger kids.

Where oh where are these moguls?

The new course is located on Turnaround and can be accessed via the Alpine Meadows Chair, The Summit Chair or The Comet Chair. You can ski down The Face and cut to the right half way down the run, ski down The Chute, ski down Southern Cross or ski down Christmas Bowl and cut over across Bib's Bumps. Wade figures if you are sitting in the hot tub at the Pinnacles looking up the hill with a set of binoculars, you'd have a killer view of the course.

After a big afternoon of skiing Moguls!
