Student Certification Cards
With the new ISBE guidelines and COVID guidance I wanted to notify you how we are updating our arrival procedures.
Following return to school from Spring Break, ONLY students that do not have their self certification card or a note from their parents that is signed stating they certify that their child is symptom free and has not been told by a contact tracer that they need to quarantine, will need to be temperature checked prior to entering the school.
Any student that forgets to bring their lanyard to school will receive a minor, unless they have a written note from their parent acting as their certification card.
Any student that has NEVER received a self certification card and lanyard, should contact the main office for one. Any other student that needs one that has lost theirs will need to bring in $1 (in an envelope with their name on it) for a new one.
Thank you for all of your at home support in keeping our students healthy!
COVID-19 Quick Reminders
Please keep your child home from school and contact our main office (847-963-7500) if a student exhibits a Covid-19 symptom, has a fever, or has been in close contact with any person that has tested positive for COVID-19.
All staff and students at Winston Campus Elementary are expected to follow proper face covering protocols, social distance, and practice frequent hand washing. We will continue to follow the recommendations of the CDC and snacks will not be permitted in the classrooms, equipment will not be used at recess, and classroom materials will not be shared. Please remind our students of the importance to follow the safety procedures we have in place to support a safe and healthy learning environment.
Please contact Marilynn Smith, Principal or Michael Coleman, Assistant Principal if you have any COVID-19 questions or concerns.
Reminder: Fully Power Down Chromebooks Each Night
Please be sure to power down your chromebooks completely each night and not just close them. The chromebooks do not auto-update from home if they have not been fully powered down. This is especially important to avoid technology issues.
3 Core Values of WCE: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe!
Use the following links below to view the Winston Campus Elementary PBIS Handbook!
Please be aware that you may receive a survey at your home address from ISBE to complete.
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) surveys a representative sample of parents of students with disabilities to determine how well schools throughout the state are involving parents in their children’s education. The survey results are a required component of ISBE’s Annual Performance Report (APR) to the United States Department of Education.
This year, our district is included in the survey sample. Please view the attached flyer regarding this survey so our district can ensure an accurate and representative reflection of the good work performed by the district.
If you do receive this at your home address we highly encourage you to complete this survey and assist us in our family-school partnerships in special education.
ACCESS Assessment
Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) and Illinois Science Assessment (IAS)
Each year, all Illinois public schools are required to administer state assessments like the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) and the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) to its students. Although the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has asked the United States Department of Education to waive this requirement due to the impact of COVID-19, the waiver was, unfortunately, denied this week. As such, ISBE has instructed school districts to begin preparing to administer the IAR to students in grades 3 - 8 and ISA to students in grades 5 and 8. ISBE has also indicated that ALL students will be asked to complete IAR and ISA in person at their school.
District 15 has set its testing window to begin on April 12 and continue through May 15.
Watch for additional information about how we plan to schedule students currently learning within our Virtual Learning Classrooms into their home school for the required in-person IAR and/or ISA assessment as well as information about the individual opt-out provision being made available to parents for this year only due to COVID 19.
Beyond Just Boundaries Community Engagement
Since its founding in 1946, District 15 has become a destination district, known for our academic and social emotional initiatives and for leading the way in literacy and culturally responsive practices. While we are incredibly proud of the work we have done academically, little attention or funding has been given to the operational foundation of the district over those 75 years—our 20 school buildings, and how to most effectively use them to support the academic needs of our uniquely diverse population.
Our decades-old boundary lines no longer meet our communities’ needs. Solving these challenges brings opportunity. By improving our boundary lines and modernizing our facilities, we can achieve many of the enhancements our community has requested for decades, which will support our students’ academic and social emotional needs.
Realigning school boundaries is never easy. But the outcome of this process will result in widespread improvements for everyone in District 15—not just for today’s students, but for generations to come.
That’s why our community has collaborated - for the past three years - in order to develop a solution. Thousands of community members have provided insight to our district leaders and elected Board of Education Members, and together we have identified nine high value priorities for our school district while maintaining our commitment to fiscal responsibility:
Focus on Near-Neighborhood Schools
Establish a Cohesive Educational Path for Students
Balance Enrollment
Offer Full-Day Kindergarten for All
Upgrade to a Middle School Model
Eliminate the Bilingual Overlay
Ensure Equitable Access to Programs and Services
Utilize Our Facilities More Efficiently
Repair and Restore Our School Buildings
This multi-year effort requires continuous planning, even in the midst of the pandemic. We are ready to take the next steps forward by inviting the community to learn more about where we are in the planning process and invite them to share feedback to help further inform our thinking.
Our goal throughout this process is to gather feedback from the community with opportunities for two-way communication. In an effort to keep a two-way dialogue, we will have a cap on the number of participants for our virtual sessions. We will follow state and local guidelines for the number of in-person participants we will host. If you are not able to attend or are not selected for one of the sessions, we will be recording and sharing a session to ensure the whole District 15 community will stay informed.
All of the sessions will cover the same information. To register for a session, please visit the website.
Kindergarten Registration for 2021-22
Kindergarten and new student online registration for the 2021-22 school year begins on February 15. You may register your new student by visiting the registration page on the District website. Many questions about Kindergarten can be answered by reading our “Welcome to Kindergarten!” guide.
Please be aware that new students must show proof of residency and age to complete the registration process. District 15 is also developing a process for verifying residency for existing students as well. When the process is complete, we will share the revised requirements with all families.
For written instructions, you may view Campus Parent - Online Registration Instructions, or visit your school during office hours for assistance.
