The Man
Came into public office by way of a coup d'etat, March 23, 1982. Creates a campaign of mass murder against Mayans. Lead a military regime documented to have been responsible for massacres, rapes, as well as acts of torture and genocide.
Judge issues warrant for his arrest in 2006, as well as other formal officials during the civil war of Guatemala.
Overthrown in yet another coup in 1983 lead by Óscar Humberto Mejía Victores, his own Defense Minister.
Runs for office again in 2003 and comes in third place. Put under house arrest a year later.
On March 19th, 2013 put on trial for crimes against humanity including the deaths of 1,771 Mayans during 1982-1983.
His rule is considered to be one of the most violent periods in war, an estimated 200,00 people died or went missing during Guatemala's 36 year conflict.
