Bringing Rios Montt to Justice

This short documentary chronicles the events of the Guatemalan Civil War that ensued for around 36 years. During this war, 200,000 people either died or went missing. Man were sent to military camps where they would be tortured or executed, woman were raped and those who resisted were sent to torture. No mercy was shown to anyone, even pregnant women were taken advantage of, some were even sliced open while they were still alive.

The video goes into detail about the people were executed, a man who was tortured for 15 days is interviewed and a mass grave is seen being excavated. The other points to this documentary include the road to Rios Montt's trial for genocide.

"Rios Montt and the Weight of his Actions"

This photograph was taken on March 13, 2013 during the beginning of his trial. Using Adobe Photoshop, I added blood splatters to his face and clothing to represent the death of the native Mayans and the civil war fighters. I felt that blood was needed in this photo because all though he didn't personally kill these people, their blood is on his hands. He needs to be held responsible, their deaths cannot be forgotten.

Essential Question

What were the consequences of Montt's brutal regime on the people of Guatemala?
