TRES' MOBILE MUSEUM TAKES PROJECT BASED LEARNING TO THE NEXT LEVEL!
Tar River's 4th Grade created a Mobile Museum about their assigned animals for their Project Based Learning project. They set their museum up in the school hallway and invited all students to visit and to learn about their chosen animal. Students planned and organized the entire museum display. They had a 3-D model of their animal, an information booklet, and a powerpoint presentation, along with a picture of their animal's biome. We are proud of the excellent work these students displayed.

TRES' NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION CEREMONY LEAVES THE CROWD STUNNED!
December 14th was an exciting night at Tar River Elementary. They held their National Elementary Honor Society Induction ceremony in their multi-purpose room. It was the first time an in person induction had been held in 2 years. There were 11 4th graders and 7 5th graders inducted. The current members planned and orchestrated the entire ceremony with the guidance of their advisor, 5th grade teacher, Deb Snyder. Special music was provided by NEHS member, Emily Parrot, on her guitar. Inductees and their guests were treated to a "to go reception" to conclude the evening.
Congratulations to these students on their academic accomplishments!
We see you Emily! Keep Rocking Out! (Check out her pic below!)
Butner Stem Middle School's “Falcon Fun-derland Curriculum Night” Was "Funtastic!"
Butner-Stem Middle School welcomed families back into the building for the first time in over eighteen months with a “Falcon Fun-derland Curriculum Night” on December 7th from 6:00 to 7:00. Families entered through a luminary path and were greeted by band students playing festive tunes. During one point in the evening, the guitar class entertained families with a piece they learned during enrichment class. Four rotations were set up for students to move through with their families. Students shared their academic progress and goals in Student-Led Conferences rotation. To celebrate Computer Science Education Week, the Robotics and Coding teacher, Ms. Leiner, led participants in creating binary coding bracelets in the coding rotation. Families participated in a STEAM Cardboard Gingerbread activity where they were challenged to construct a “gingerbread” building using cardboard and other materials from our Makerspace in the STEAM rotation. Food trucks from local vendors offered a variety of food and beverage options to families. Santa was available for photo-ops, everyone was treated to hot chocolate, and door prizes were announced throughout the evening. Butner-Stem Middle School hopes to continue this as a December tradition for its students and families.
THE MONTH OF JANUARY
January was named for the Roman god Janus, known as the protector of gates and doorways who symbolize beginnings and endings. Janus is depicted with two faces, one looking into the past, the other with the ability to see into the future. What a fitting symbol for this first day of the year; this month is our door into the new year. Read more about all 12 months' names here.
The Romans often made promises to Janus and exchanged good wishes. Read more about the custom of making New Year resolutions—and see how they have changed over time to today!
Janus am I; oldest of potentates;
Forward I look, and backward, and below
I count, as god of avenues and gates,
The years that through my portals come and go.
–Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, American poet (1807–82)
JANUARY CALENDAR
- January 1 is New Year's Day. While you're still recuperating from the prior night's parties, read about some other new year's traditions you might not know about and celebrate with some Hoppin' John for good luck.
- January 5 brings Twelfth Night, an English folk custom that marked the end of Christmas merrymaking, and in ancient Celtic tradition, the end of the 12-day winter solstice celebration. On Twelfth Night, it was customary for the assembled company to toast each other from the wassail bowl.
- January 6 is Epiphany. According to the New Testament's Gospels, on this date the Magi—the three wise men or kings—venerated and brought gifts to the infant Jesus. Bake a King Cake with a lucky bean inside!
- January 17 is Benjamin Franklin's birthday. He was not only a world-renowned statesman, inventor, and scientist, but was also fascinated by agriculture. How much do you know about Ben?
- January 18 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day (observed). This holiday is held on the third Monday in January and honors the principles of this civil rights leader and Nobel Prize Winner dedicated to nonviolence.
- January 20 is Inauguration Day, which is the day that the next U.S. president is sworn into office.
JUST FOR FUN DAYS!
January is National Clean Up Your Computer Month and National Hot Tea Month! Here are some more fun things to celebrate in January:
- January 1: Z Day (On this day, those whose last name begins with "Z" get to go first instead of last.)
- January 3: National Chocolate-Covered Cherry Day
- January 6: National Bean Day
- January 8: Elvis Presley's Birthday
- January 10: National Houseplant Appreciation Day
- January 14: National Dress Up Your Pet Day
- January 20: National Penguin Day
- January 22: National Answer Your Cat's Questions Day
- January 29: National Puzzle Day
