Ask Us!
Denver Public Schools and Denver Public Library are teaming up to offer you a great night of professional learning. DPL is looking forward to presenting tips, best practices and fun facts about the “Ask Us” service which is linked on the LION home page. This service allows students to chat with a live librarian in order to assist them with finding the information they need for homework and school projects. This service can be used at any level (K-12+) and is available 24/7. It is an excellent way for students to personalize their learning through identifying resources they need to meet their learning goals, including public librarians.
We encourage you to attend this presentation as part of our collaborative partnership with DPL. We will offer snacks and conversation, and are working out the possibility of a Google hangout option. Come check out the new Rudolfo Gonzales library (a library designed to be an incubator for growth!) on Thursday, November 19th from 4-5:45 pm to see “Ask Us” in action and to discuss other assistance DPL has to offer DPS teachers, librarians, and students.

Libraries Transform - ALAs new public awareness campaign
This new ALA national public awareness campaign highlights the transformative nature of libraries and the critical role they play in the digital age. The focus is on what libraries do for and with people rather than what they have for people. The campaign covers all kinds of libraries—public, school, academic, and special—and their role in the various communities they serve and are part of. The goal of the Libraries Transform campaign is to change the perception that ‘libraries are just quiet places to do research, find a book, and read’ to a shared understanding of libraries as dynamic centers for learning in the digital age http://www.librariestransform.org

What are some of the connections between Personalized Learning and Libraries?
In Bray and McClaskey’s Make Learning Personal, there is a chart outlining some of the basic elements of personalized learning (student-driven learning). They provide excellent jumping off points for articulating the role of librarians and libraries in personalized learning:
“ students own and are responsible for their own learning that includes their voice and choice on how and what they learn.” Librarians know there is a large body of reading research around the critical importance of giving student voice and choice in what they read and what they research or inquire about. Voice and choice drives a student’s motivation to learn, increases engagement and reading comprehension.
“students acquire the skills to select and use the appropriate technology and resources to support and enhance their learning.” Librarians teach students and teachers about the technology and resources available to access information and share and create knowledge. Librarians also teach students how to evaluate and ethically use that information.
“actively participates in the design of their learning.” An important part of any inquiry design is determining a plan for research/learning and a demonstration of their knowledge. Librarians are again in an important role in terms of building capacity in teachers and students in these areas.
“Builds a network of peers, experts, and teachers to guide and support their learning.” Librarians have always engaged with their greater community, bringing in authors, public librarians, and cultural programs. Now they also use technology to create connections with peers/students in other buildings through tools like Google Connected Classroom, Skype in the Classroom and Flat Classroom.
What is the difference between Titlewise and Library Dashboard Reports?
Titlewise is a snapshot of your collection every July when we upload your school’s information. The information in the Library Dashboard is continuously updated, so as the year progresses and you weed or purchase books, the information in your dashboard may begin to look different than your Titlewise report.
