Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
I wanted to update you on protocols we use in emergency situations and also how we conduct drills to prepare us. Every school year, we have one required Fire Drill every month. We try different scenarios and time frames to help our students feel comfortable in the event of an actual fire and evacuation. We also do Lock Down Drills (bad person is in the building), Lock Out Drills (bad person is outside the building but in school vicinity) and Earthquake Drills. The Lock Out Drill and the Earthquake Drill are done as an entire school district.
With the Lock Down Drill (bad person is in the building), teachers lock the classroom or pod doors, cover the windows facing the hallway, turn off the lights and keep their classes quiet. Staff and students who happen to be outside exit the schoolyard together and head to the neighborhood. Since Washington County Police will be called in a true Lock Out, they will be available to assist our students and staff to safety.
With the Lock Out Drill (bad person is outside), we secure the perimeter of the building. Teachers close their blinds that face the outside of the building and continue teaching. All staff and students in the schoolyard quickly enter the building.
Staff has also been trained on how to evacuate the building and move students to a different location if we need to. In the case of a building evacuation, student pick up will be in an alternate location. This location will be emailed and/or texted to you by the school district.
Please know the safety of your children is a priority for us. Please help us make our school even safer by making sure your background check is done. Thank you for your continued support of our school.
Warm regards,
Sheila Baumgardner

Please Keep Our Crossing Guards and Students Safe
We want all students to arrive to school and home safely. That’s our number one goal. Our crossing guards on Bethany have had a few close calls where drivers turn onto/off Bethany to/ from Oak Hills Blvd., have made unsafe maneuvers. This puts the guards and our students at risk.
We’ve been checking and these close calls are often Oak Hills Elementary parents! Slow down!! The crossing guards are out every day, rain or shine to help students get to school safely. By law you must stop before the crosswalk, not in it, and stay stopped until the crosswalk is completely clear, not just your lane. Do not turn left or right through an occupied crosswalk. Do not overtake or pass a car that is stopped in front of a crosswalk.
Thank you for working with us to make the trip to school safe for all of our students!
