The Joyful Teacher

Experiencing Joy is one of the greatest emotions we can have. When we are joyful we are in a better state of mind and more effective in all capacities. Living in fear is destructive and can bring about ineffective and poor actions. Yet, with Joy, we are confident and self-assured. As teachers, we have the opportunity to go down both pathways. Joy or Fear. I want to challenge each of us to look for and strive to live and teach with Joy.

When we enter the classroom with a joyful attitude and spirit our students will feel safe and comfortable with the environment we have created. Students who feel safe and comfortable are better equipped to learn and grow. This happens in the way we talk to ALL students and if we are equitable with all students.

How do we develop joy as a teacher? First, recognize the moments it occurs. What are the good moments and how can you reproduce and continue with that mindset and classroom activity that produced the joy. Second, look at each moment with students as an opportunity to grow. As teachers we are in an awesome position to influence the lives of kids...truly impact their lives...your words may be the words that change a student's entire outlook on life and living. Our words matter.

So today. Find joy in the service you perform. Find joy in the PLC you will be participating in and find Joy for yourself outside of teaching. ReNew your heart and soul.

Constructs and Goal Setting

Last week you received information about goal setting and the constructs. As soon as you can find some time to complete one of the two self-assessments (construct 2 or 3). Then set up a mentoring session where we can begin setting your goals for the coming months..

There are three types of ETMs and numerous titles from which to choose. ETMs can be completed online or in face-to-face sessions. Additionally, you have the option to go with your mentor for a half-day (sub provided) to observe effective peers for one ETM. A full listing of the ETMs available can be found at http://www.bluevalleyk12.org/etm.

What to know about the Mentor

Growing up in Nebraska I was raised to be a rabid Husker fan. Now, at 33...nothing has changed. I love my Huskers and some day we will rise again.
