Rock Your World!
Summer Reading Theme - Gems, Stones, Minerals, Fossils
Focus: Kindness Rocks
In Your MakerSpace: paint positive messages on rocks and spread them throughout the community. Think of all the colleagues who would love to work with you on this international trend:
- Art teachers
- School counselors
- PBIS / School Climate Team
- Special Ed educators
- IB / Service Project coordinators
Collaborate with Counselors: Tie literacy into your Kindness Rocks project by including Rosen Interactive books on Character Strength. This 7-book series (purchased for you by SLS) is available at two reading levels to reach all students... and there's no limit to the number of simultaneous readers! Other resources to explore:
- InfoBits Culture Views
- Flocabulary's Social and Emotional Learning
- Rosen's Cyber Safety & Internet Do's and Dont's
Community Service Project: Team up with a local business or two to organize the construction / restoration of a neighborhood rock garden. On a smaller scale, make tiny rock gardens to share with local senior living centers.
Focus: Geology
Host a Book Club: All those dinosaur books on your shelf make the perfect tie-in to this summer reading theme! Elementary librarians, remind your students that they have 24-7 digital access to Nat Geo (courtesy of SLS). With unlimited access, you can make an award-winning book like The Skull in the Rock an all-school or family read!
Collaborate with Science Teachers: School Library System offers all school libraries free access to Rosen Interactive Books, including the series, Rocks: The Hard Facts for younger readers and Spotlight on Earth Science for older students. Ask your science department to explore the topic together for an info-rich, accessible collaboration.
