Cougar Connect

Week of September 2, 2019

Picture Day

Picture Day is this Tuesday. Students will take their picture during PE class in the gym, so they will not suit up for PE that day. Students received an order form this past week. Even if students are not ordering pictures, they still need to take a picture for their Kennedy ID card. (Retakes are on Friday, October 18).

8th grade students received their Chromebooks last week. 6th and 7th graders will receive theirs this week. For those who do not have internet at home, we will work on getting out the hotspots this week.

The Chomebook needs to come fully charged to Kennedy each day. The charger needs to stay at home. I encourage families to keep the charger in the adult’s room so that you know where the Chromebook is at night so that your student isn’t on the Chromebook playing games. While students are using the Chromebook for homework, you should try to monitor their activity and frequently check the history on the internet of the sites your student has been visiting.

Principal's Coffee

I am looking forward to our first Principal’s Coffee of the year this Thursday, September 5, from 8:30-9:30 am in the library. We will review some data for last year, have an open forum time for questions and concerns, and then tour 6th grade classes (and electives, if we have time).

PE Clothes

A reminder that students need to be suiting up for PE everyday and then changing back into their regular clothes after. For those who have PE the first period of the day, they can wear their PE clothes to school, however, what I saw this week is that many students forgot to bring regular clothes to change back into. So perhaps for most students it is better for them to just change at school.

We know that some clothes are still back ordered. Merrily is working on getting that inventory. PE teachers do have the list so that students aren’t penalized for not having their PE uniform.

PowerSchool Portal and CAASPP Scores

Students will receive their PowerSchool parent portal information this week. Please ask your student for it. This will allow you to setup your account. I am told that you will be able to see your student’s CAASPP scores in PowerSchool. Once these are up and running I will create directions on how to find these scores.

Back To School Night

Mark your calendars for Back To School Night so that you can meet your student’s teachers. It is from 6-7:30 pm on Thursday, September 19. There will be food for purchase on the blacktop outside of the gym starting at 5:30 pm for your convenience. We will also make sure you learn how to use Google Classroom so that you can monitor many of your student's assignments. This will be part of my presentation from 6-6:30 pm in the gym.

Traffic Reminders

A reminder to please be courteous to our neighbors. I am getting reports of illegal u-turns, double parking, blocking driveways, etc. We have the nice new parking lot in the front. Please use it.

Throughout this year we will offer many different clubs. Some will occur before school, some during lunch, and others after school. Students can start their own club by finding a teacher advisor who will sponsor the club and allow the students to use that classroom. Student Council can provide $100 in seed money for supplies. Here are the clubs we know about so far:

Dungeons & Dragons Club: Tuesdays, 3:15-4:15 pm, Room 528 (Started Last Week)

Photography Club: Starting soon. Details will be shared in next weekend’s Cougar Connect.

Yoga Club: Starting soon. Details will be shared in next weekend’s Cougar Connect.

Zero Period

We appear to be on track to start zero period next week on Tuesday, September 10. Zero period will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-8:18 am. Students will receive a grade. If your student receives a zero period you will be notified by Friday evening. As mentioned last week, I am not convinced we have all elective forms, which had that zero period preference. Also, some of you are new, so you definitely didn’t turn in that form. I suggest you fill out this form just in case:

Academic Support

Like last year, we are planning to provide opportunities for academic support before and after school. Stay tuned to next weekend’s Cougar Connect for details.

San Mateo County Pride Center

Students! Join staff from the San Mateo County Pride Center at lunchtime on Wednesday in the library, September 4th, to learn about Kennedy's own PRIDE GROUP. The Pride Group is a weekly group at Kennedy where Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, or Questioning (LGBTQ+) Kennedy students can gather in a safer space with peers to build relationships, get support around the many challenges of being LGBTQ+ in middle school, meet other queer folks, play games, learn, and have fun! The group is facilitated by two mental health clinicians from the San Mateo County Pride Center who specialize in working with LGBTQ+ identified folks. So come hang out with us, play some "Jeoparqueer," help take some candy off our hands, and learn about whether the Pride Group might be a good fit for making this coming school year a little more awesome!

Attendance/Appointment Procedures

If your student will be absent due to sickness or a morning appointment, please call the office first thing that morning (or leave a message the night before), 650-482-2409, so that we know your student is out. If your student is at an appointment, you when your student returns you need to come with your student into the office. Your student needs to be signed in by you and needs a pass from the office to enter class.

If your student needs to leave during the day for an appointment, you need to come into the office and sign your student out. If your student returns during the day, you need to come sign your student back in. Your student needs to get a pass from an office staff member at that time to enter class.

Announcements From The Community

Sequoia High School Shadow Program

Dear Friends in the Sequoia HS Community,

Another school year has arrived, and for us at Sequoia, that means another chance to welcome visiting 8th graders for a first look at the school. Our Shadow Program provides the unique opportunity to accompany a current Sequoia student throughout the school day. In our process, we make every effort to match our shadows and hosts based on curricular and extracurricular interests submitted during registration. In addition to seeing a host's regularly scheduled academic classes, we will kick things off with a general introductory information session (8:00-8:30) and will end the day with a summative question/answer session over a complimentary lunch in our Student Activities Center, ending the day at noon. Parents are also welcome to attend both the introduction session as well as an optional informational session from 8:30-9:15.

Shadow dates can be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that the program has become very popular and early dates can fill up fast. the program will open for electronic registration on Wednesday, September 11 on the SHADOWS PAGE (Home Page > Parents and Community > 8th Grade Shadowing Program) of the Sequoia HS website. Please feel free to contact shadow coordinator Corey Uhalde ( with any questions or comments.
