Testing Update (MAP Testing)
Winter MAP testing will continue this week. Our traditional program will take the Language Arts assessment this week and our Montessori program will take the Math assessment this week.
ELA Department, please make sure your sessions are created prior to class beginning. If you need assistance this week, please reach out to Dr. Baptist or Ms. Briscoe.
7th & 8th Grade Will Resume Open Lunch on Monday
SMS Staffing Updates
We have several new team members that will be joining our teaching team in February. Mr. Torres will be joining our CTE Department in Mid-February. Mr. Torres will take over classes for Ms. Wade who retired last semester. Mr. DeFazio will be joining our 8th grade ELA department February 6th. Also, this week Ms. Waldron will be joining our 8th grade science department as our new Science Teaching Assistant. We are excited about our new team members and the great teaching and coaching they will bring to our scholars this semester.
School Pictures on Thursday, February 9th
We will have school pictures on Thursday, February 9th. Additional information including payment details will be distributed to all scholars on Wednesday of this week in their homeroom classes. Staff members will be able to take pictures starting as early as 8:00am.
Scholars will take their pictures with during elective classes on Thursday of next week. A schedule will be included in next week's newsletter.
Congratulations Ms. Stuckey SMS Teacher of the Year 2016-17
Congratulations to our 6th grade math teacher Ms. Stuckey. Ms. Stuckey has been selected as our Teacher of the Year for the 2016-2017 school year. We wish her the best as she moves forward to compete for the CMS Teacher of the Year honor.

Community Meeting Guided Questions for this week.
Monday: Last week our school had 29 Out of School Suspensions, the most of any week this year. Whose responsibility is it to make sure that our classrooms, hallways and school in general is a safe place to learn?
Tuesday: The number of our scholars with more than 10 days of unexcused absences is 35% higher than this time last year. Why is coming to school and having good attendance an example of being responsible?
Wednesday: It's possible to get a good paying job and support a family with just a high school diploma? True or False (Explain your answer)
Thursday: A person with a college degree will earn twice as much as someone with just a high school diploma? True or False (Explain your answer)
Friday:What kind of work do you think you want to do when you become an adult?
Winter Sports Weekly Update!!
Our girls and boys basketball teams and cheerleaders are back in action this week. On Monday our athletes travel to Cochrane Middle School to take on the mighty colts. On Thursday our scholar-athletes host Kennedy Middle. The girls game begins at 5:00pm and our boys game will begin immediately afterwards. Please come out and support our scholar-athletes as they demonstrate character, sportsmanship and athletic excellence on the court this week.
