Duty Supervision and Transitions
Also, when you have morning duty, please meet cafeteria staff outside the cafeteria to receive students instead of waiting on students to be brought to you. It helps ease the burden of transitioning from the cafeteria when duty staff are ready and available as students are leaving the cafeteria.

D.A.B. Check In, Check Out
Monday Group Meeting with Ms. Adelowo. Meeting focus will be "Mindset Monday".
The following are "morning" conversation starters that mentors will would have with their DAB student.
Monday (with Ms. Adelowo): Mindset Monday - What is one thing you can’t do yet? Read the book “The Good Egg”. This book gives students real examples of things they can do when they feel pressures weighing them down causing “cracks” and “scrambling”. It opens up the discussion with what to do to take care of your mental health and helps children understand how to deal with their emotions.
Tuesday: Terrific Choice Tuesday - What great choice will “YOU” make today?
Wednesday: Wise Words Wednesday - "All the goodnesses of a good egg cannot make up the badness of a bad one”. Have student write, “What do these wise words mean to you?” Discuss.
Thursday: Thumbs Up Thursday - Tell me about one “positive” interaction you have had this week at school.
This week's goal is taking care of your mental health (emotions).
Operations
Classroom Care: Please document classroom cleaning concerns in the book in the office. Have students clean around their area before dismissal.
Restrooms: Remind students of proper restroom care (flushing, no tissue on the floor, one paper towel, turning water off, and etc.). Do not let students go to the restroom alone. A bathroom monitor would be great for ensuring that the restrooms stay clean.
Substitute Folders
All teachers are expected to maintain a RED FOLDER on your desk throughout the year. This will be an emergency lesson plan folder that will be used in the event that you cannot get lesson plans here by 7:30. The RED FOLDERS should be used in emergencies only. Within this folder there should be a scripted lesson, which anyone could easily follow, for each subject you teach. Also, include the following:
class list
daily schedule including special class times and the time you and your partner teacher switch, as well as dismissal times
scheduled bathroom breaks
recess
lunch time
duty assignments (afternoon)
drill procedures
transportation list that shows how your students get home
list of students that check in with the nurse at designated times
times students are pulled from the regular classroom for interventions, special education services or speech
Substitute Folders will be checked by a member of the Core Team this week. Please make sure all components are included.
Notes from the Counselor
We have a lot of students who express they have “anger issues”. Anger is a secondary emotion, meaning it is an emotional reaction to a different emotion. Please take the time to read this article explaining 75 Causes of Anger in Children. Identifying what is behind the anger can typically help us address the cause. Once we identify the cause, then we can begin to help an angry child. Read 35 Simple Ways You Can Help an Angry Kid for ways to improve your student's behavior.
Mindfulness seems to be the new “buzzword” in education. Using mindfulness can benefit our students who suffer from ADHD, stress, anxiety, depression, and more. You can easily incorporate mindfulness activities into your morning routine to help start the day off with a positive light. There are eight essential benefits of mindfulness for kids. If your struggling with how to incorporate it into your classroom, click this link to see activities you can do with your students. Incorporating some of these activities could begin to help shift the mindset and atmosphere of your classroom.

News from the Librarian
Students only need to bring library books with them every other week for checkout. Students do not need to bring their books to the library when it is not their check-out week.
Also, please get Ms. Robinson a list of your students' AR levels so she can better help them choose books to help them test over the correct books for AR.
This website is great for readalouds if you cannot get a particular book from Ms. Robinson in the school library but you want your students to experience it. This website features celebrities or authors reading books, they are very engaging and an awesome classroom treat. Students can go to the website on their own time and choose books to listen to as well! The best part is it's absolutely free!
IXL
1. Please ensure that students are using their IXL login every single time. IXL will allow you practice for so long within logging in; when students are not logged in, none of the work they are doing is being recorded.
2. Diagnostic/Practice - By this point, students should be actively practicing skills and should be beyond the diagnostic stage. You can find those skills by going to your subject area and grade level or have students practice the skills that are recommended on their diagnostic overview page or recommendations page (derived from their diagnostic). Please ensure that students are practicing skills appropriate for the class they are in...this means you must monitor students to make sure they are not working on math during reading intervention and visa versa. When done correctly, response to intervention has a 1.29 effect size
*An effect size larger than 0.4 is considered to have ‘greater than average influence’ on achievement*
3. Clear learning target/objective/skill: Students must understand the skill/objective before them. For example, let's not just tell 4th grade literacy students to practice A 1; provide them with a frame of reference: practice A1: use key details to determine the main idea. By providing students with a clear purpose (skill/learning target/objective), students know where and how to channel their learning efforts. Modeling for students how to identify the objective will help you in that area.
4. Please do not allow students to practice, practice, practice without you giving frequent feedback. According to John Hattie, feedback has an effect size of .70. By providing feedback, you help students improve their performance by addressing misunderstandings and reinforcing correct practice and techniques.
Nurse's Corner
Flu shot permission slips must be signed in order for students to receive a flu shot! Our FREE flu shot clinic will be held in the Blytheville Elementary School library October 1, 2019 from 9:00-12:00. This clinic will be open to all staff members and their spouses! Staff will receive permission forms from Nurse Russell or may fill them out when they come to receive their vaccine.
Please use the Gym entrance to enter the Nurse's office instead of using the outside door.
A note went home with students informing parents that the school nurse or faculty member may use topical ointments such as but not limited to triple antibiotic ointment, orajel, and lip balm. Please remind students that a parent signature is required for treatment to be provided.
