DEARBORN AWARDED STATE GRANT FOR PATHWAYS WORK!
January 2020
Dearborn STEM Academy one of 14 MA Schools Awarded Innovation Pathways Grant
BOSTON —
The Baker-Polito Administration today awarded more than $676,000 in grants to 14 high schools that have launched new early career programs for students, giving them experience in a specific high-demand industry through college coursework and internships with local employers.
Students are able to choose an area of study, such as information technology, life sciences or advanced manufacturing, and gain knowledge and insight as to whether the field is something they are interested in pursuing, as well as earn college credits at no cost to them prior to graduation.
The high schools that received grants today had their programs, known as Innovation Pathways, approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in Spring 2019 in preparation for fall enrollment. More than 1,000 students are expected to be enrolled in programs at these 14 high schools, and across the Commonwealth more than 1,500 students are enrolled in early career programs at 26 high schools.
“These early career programs provide students a head-start in learning and thinking about future career options so that they are able to make informed decisions about what they want to pursue in college and beyond,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “We are proud to continue to invest in these important programs that can shape a student’s future success.”
“Innovation Pathways are designed to build strong partnerships between high schools and local employers to offer students the knowledge and experience in growing, in demand industries throughout the Commonwealth,” said Lt. Governor Karyn Polito. “By providing more young people hands-on career experiences, we can increase their skills and engage with them in a new, innovative and exciting way.”
Lt. Governor Polito made the announcement while visiting Brockton High School with Education Secretary James Peyser.

DEBATE!
LAST WEEK OF ACCESS TESTING!
Federal and state laws require that English learner (EL) students be assessed annually to measure their proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking English, as well as the progress they are making in learning English. In fulfillment of these laws, EL students are required to participate in ACCESS for ELLs tests, which replaced MEPA tests beginning in the 2012-2013 school year.
ACCESS for ELLs are administered once annually in January-February.
EdVestors-partnering with BPS to improve education in math!
How can we improve math education in Boston?
That's the question the EdVestors Zeroing In On Math Fellows have spent the past year answering. Last Thursday, at the Roxbury Innovation Center educators from across Boston joined Math Fellows for an escape room experience designed by the fellows that explored project-based learning, access and differentiation, and community connections.
GRADE 7 READING BUDDIES!
Thank you Grade 7 ELA teacher Ms. Laramore and BTR Resident Mr. Jenkins for making this happen!
NATIONAL GRID ASSOCIATION OF BLACK PROFESSIONALS
National Grid sent members of their ABP (Association of Black Professionals) to the Dearborn STEM Academy to share with a couple of our 9th and 10th grade engineering classes. They shared their own college and work experiences, a financial exercise, distributed some gift bags and explained what National Grid was all about. Ultimately they gave some STEM based inspiration wrapped in an identity that students could relate to. We appreciate them coming!
Thank you Family Engagement Coordinator Pam Bailey and teacher Mike Dixon!
