PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Hidden River Families--
If you have been around Hidden River for any amount of time, or even just kept up with our newsletter from week to week, one of our hopes is that students and families start to experience and understand our highest priority values on inclusion and collaboration. These two values represent the foundation of our mission and work to meet the needs of all students. They are also very “aspirational,” which means we know that we need to spend every day improving things in order to accomplish what we are trying to accomplish. It is important, then, to celebrate some successes along the way, which is what I will share with you today.
Celebrating Inclusion:
There is a really amazing scene that plays out every other day with a particular group of students on the field during our break time at lunch. If you wander out to our field, you will see a group of students who are from different grades, different friend groups, and different genders taking part in a football game-- masks and gloves on! One of the consistent players in this group is one of our students with a developmental disability who has been seamlessly integrated into the game each time it is played. The sense of joy on his face at being included, and the interactions of our other students participating in this game, is a highlight of a school committed to including students of all backgrounds in the work we are doing. This group of students is setting an amazing example of this value, not only for our Hidden River community but I would argue for our society as a whole!
Celebrating Collaboration:
This past week during Ms. Fordham’s 6th period 6th grade science class, students were working on a specific way of writing about their scientific thinking. As she helped them understand the structure for this writing, the students started talking about how the structure of this writing was really similar to what they have been learning in their ELA classes this year. This connection was exciting to Ms. Fordham and the other students as well (as the “light bulbs” of understanding started to light up!), and certainly to me as I witnessed this. This is my celebration around our value on collaboration, because it represents not only students working together to make connections, but it also is a result of our teachers and staff working together to introduce learning strategies that can be transferred across subject areas. This is just one example of the value of collaboration at work-- it has been amazing to see students working in groups, even socially distanced, across many of our classes over the past few weeks.
A final note for today, as we enter the month of May, that also is reflective of our priorities on developing a culture of inclusion and collaboration. The month of May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month, so I wanted to name how vital this group of students and families are to who we are here at Hidden River. To those who identify with the rich Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage, we want you to know that we are better as a community because you are part of it.

- If you would like to read more than one book/article, you may read one in each of the categories and receive an entry into the drawing for each (up to four entries possible).
- Books may be in any format (physical, audiobook, eBook) and may be a book you borrowed or own.
- Choose books or articles that were not assigned to read for class.
- To enter the contest, go to the HRMS All-School tile on Canvas. In modules scroll down to the library section and select HRMS May Reading Challenge Entry.
- Submit a completed form for your chance to win a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card! You may enter once in each category. Four gift cards will be awarded by a random drawing.
- Entries need to be submitted by 5/31/2021 and the winners will be drawn at the beginning of June.

STUDENT COVID-19 WRITING PIECE
Monroe School District Students,
What has school been like during the COVID-19 pandemic? The Monroe community wants to hear from YOU!
Each year, the Monroe School District mails a community newsletter to all homes within the district’s boundaries (see past editions here). That’s over 16,000 mailboxes! The purpose of these newsletters is to share information and positive news about our schools, students and staff with all community members.
This past year of school hasn’t been like any other before and we want to share YOUR first-hand accounts of what it has been like as students in the next edition of our community newsletter. Many of our community members don’t have students in school and are very curious what school has been like for students this past year. Therefore, we are inviting all students to submit a writing piece that may be featured both in the printed newsletter and on our website. At least three entries will be selected, including one from the elementary (K-5), middle (6-8), and high school (9-12) grade levels.
Writing Prompt:
You are living through history. Future historians may look back on the journals, essays and poetry that ordinary people, like you, are creating now to tell the story of life during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Imagine 100 years have passed and it’s now the year 2121. Historians are looking back on a piece of your writing that describes what school was like during the pandemic of 2020-21. In an essay, journal entry, poem, news article or any form of creative writing, describe what school has been like for you as a student during the pandemic.
Writing submissions will only be accepted from students who are currently enrolled in the Monroe School District. Submissions must be received no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 2021. Not all submissions will be featured in the community newsletter and/or district website. If you have questions, please email communications@monroe.wednet.edu.
FREE MEALS CONTINUE FOR ALL STUDENTS!
Did you know we are still offering FREE meals for all students, even when they are attending in-person?!
Meals for students in grades 6-12 are a combination of in school service and take-home meals. On the days they attend in-person, students are offered a free sack lunch to be eaten at school. They also have an opportunity to receive free take-home meals at the end of their day, which includes breakfasts and lunches for the days that they will be remote learning.
We know that children learn better when they have had a meal. Please encourage your student to take advantage of the free meals both in school and take-home! We will continue offering free meals through the rest of this school year!
