## Parent Information Night

Thank you to all who attended Parent Information Night on Tuesday. We are looking forward to such a wonderful year with your third graders. In case you were not able make it Tuesday, below is a link to our Third Grade Information Packet.

## BES Community Open House

What a special night Thursday! Our third grade singers were the highlight of the evening. Thank you for helping us "officially" open the new BES. If you have a video of the 3rd graders singing, could you please send it to the third grade teachers?

You can check out more photos of the Community Open House on our school Twitter page: @bes_elementary.

## Literacy News from Mrs. Langston

This week we began to study The Case of the Gasping Garbage. Our focus has been determining the motivations of the characters. Students are enjoying getting to know Drake Doyle and Nell Fossey: Science Detectives. In addition to focusing on character's motivations, students compared the character, setting, and events of two chapters. Students are also being introduced on how to write a multi-paragraph response to our reading.

The 40 Book Challenge officially began Friday! We went over how to complete our personal chart in Google Drive. We are very excited to track our progress, talk about books, and share the books we love. Parents will receive a separate letter giving more detailed information about this homework project for the year.

We will be using Google Drive often this year for writing, presentations, and other special projects. Many students were introduced to Google Drawings this week and are eager to try it out at home. Here is how students can login at home:

Password: Uppercase first initial Uppercase last initial plus lunch number.

## The Math Scoop with Mrs. Oppenheim

This week we continued to work on multiplication. I love to see how a lot of our students are starting to memorize some of the basic multiplication facts. We have also been working a lot on skip counting. These skip counting skills are helping us solve our multiplication facts.

Things to do at home: Practice multiplication, telling time and counting money.

FYI: Your child will only have math homework on Tuesday of this week because of the inservice day scheduled on Friday.

## Mrs. Holt-Taylor's Explorers

This week, the students created a model of layered sedimentary rock using plaster of Paris, rock, sand, soil, and water. Students compared their sedimentary rock layer model with others. Finally, students sorted a collection of rocks by different rock properties. We will continue with rock properties next week.

With Saturday being Constitution Day, we switched to social studies and the Constitution. Students completed a reading activity on the Amendments and enjoyed listening to the Preamble song below.
