"Paw"some Attendance Spirit Week!
Dear Families,
At Sorrick School, we recognize the tremendous impact that attendance has on long-term school success, especially in the primary grades. Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. We hope that you will help us build this habit in PreK, Kindergarten and 1st grade so that your child will learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. This week, Sorrick staff and students will participate in a spirit week in honor of our "Paw"some attendance program. Each day this week, send your child to school dressed up in the spirit attire of the day:
As an incentive for regular attendance, our "Paw"some attendance program gives students an opportunity to earn raffle tickets for individual prizes, play attendance-themed games on our game-themed bulletin board, earn class rewards, and much more! The goal of our program is to teach our students the value of regular attendance and make their school experience fun and rewarding.
At Sorrick, we know that early absences correlate with reading difficulties and poor attendance patterns in later years. According to www.attendanceworks.org, only 17 percent of students who were chronically absent in both kindergarten and first grade were reading on-level in third grade. With your help and support, we can ensure that your child has the best possible chance of success. Here are some ways that you can help:
- Set a regular bed time and morning routine
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before
- Don’t let your child stay home unless he or she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to your child's teachers and school social worker for advice on how to make him or her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session. Plan vacations around the District 117 breaks. See the academic calendar for these dates.
Please know that the staff at Sorrick is willing to support you in any way in order to ensure your child is able to maintain good attendance. Don't hesitate to reach out to us if you need our support.

5Essentials Survey
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey provides an opportunity for parents, students, and staff to share specific information about their school. The survey information is part of the school report card. In NPD117, we use this information in our continuous improvement process.
If you have children attending more than one school, we ask that you complete the survey for each school. The parent survey is available in both English and Spanish, and only takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. This survey will be available until February 14, 2020.
To take this short survey:
- Visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/
- Type and select “Cook” as "County."
- Type your child’s school name into the "School" field and select your school.
Thank you in advance for your input!
