Message from the Principal
Mighty WBS Dolphins,
A couple of things I’ve learned, especially in the past year, are that superpowers exist and heroes are real. One such hero I’d like to highlight this week is one of our school community’s finest, Mr. John Golder.
If you’ve ever had a second-grader in Mrs. Golder’s class, you realize she takes a real family approach to her teaching, and I don’t mean that figuratively. In recent years, the students of Ms. Golder’s class receive the best 5 for 1 special in the business as her husband and college-aged children are active members of her classroom community.
This is how I came to know John.
A career ATF agent and nationally recognized Fire and Explosives expert, Mr. Golder holds an undergraduate degree in Chemistry from UNCW and a Masters of Forensic Science from the University of New Haven in Connecticut. Also, by around this time next year, he will receive his Ph.D. in Forensic Science from the University of Oklahoma. And as if all that wasn’t enough, Mr. Golder in his "spare time" of late, has become a certified school teacher, with a Master’s in Education.
A man of great stature and even greater humility, John Golder possesses that thing you just can’t teach, a personality that children are naturally drawn to. I’ve seen it in real-life; students light up when he enters a room. Students know somehow right away, that Mr. Golder is on their side. It is evident that Mr. Golder has never forgotten what it feels like to be a student, and that is his superpower…that, and the fact that he never stopped believing in his own ability to learn and to teach others, despite having to face the challenges inherent to a lifetime of dyslexia.
Like all good heroes that step up to save the day when they’re needed the most, Mr. Golder is now an official substitute teacher for us. Here’s to you Mr. Golder and to all of our other super-powered heroes…we’re lucky to have you!
This year will be what we make it…let’s make it amazing! Welcome my friends, to Week 27!
