Avery-Parsons Monthly Newsletter
February 2024
Message from Mrs. Maddox!
What’s happening in visual art?
This year in visual art, our units are focused around a featured artist that changes every 5-6 weeks. So far this year we have featured Georgia O’Keeffe, Yayoi Kusama, Leonardo Da Vinci, and currently the Navajo (Dine`) people and their extraordinary weaving methods. This month, students’ creations may include woven paper, baskets, or small tapestries depending on the grade they are in. Most of your child’s artwork is currently being saved in the art room for our art show in March!
I’m excited to share an incredible art/STEAM opportunity that relates directly to our previous Da Vinci unit. If you happen to travel to the Albuquerque, NM area between now and May 16th, 2024, The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History is featuring life size models of Da Vinci’s most well-known inventions! Your students may recognize several of the machines we discussed in art class.
About the Exhibit:
Da Vinci Machines, The Exhibition is an interactive experience with full-size machines constructed after an in-depth study of Da Vinci’s designs by a group of skilled craftsmen. The exhibit includes several ‘machines’ such as the tank, the spring-powered car, the hang glider and the air screw (a precursor to the helicopter), informative panels including images of the original Da Vinci designs, and children’s activities such as building a parachute and airscrew. Also featured are high quality canvases of Da Vinci’s most famous artworks, including the Mona Lisa, Vitruvian Man, The Last Supper and the Annunciation.
“Visitors can explore the power of creative genius and the process of invention through this remarkable exhibit,” said Jennifer Hayden, President and CEO of the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History. “The exhibit is perfect for all ages and is especially intriguing for those interested in engineering and problem-solving.”
Da Vinci Machines, The Exhibition will be on display at the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History from January 27 through May 16, 2024.

If anyone gets to go, let me know what you think!
Looking forward to seeing you all at our art show during the celebration of learning in March!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Maddox
