Graded Distance Learning Underway
Online, graded instruction has begun for all students in the San Diego Unified School District. Madison students are expected to follow the weekly class schedule, participate in online instruction by teachers, use Google Classroom to get class assignments (see class codes listed by department on Madison's Distance Learning website; click on the three horizontal bars to the left of #theNEST), as well as complete and turn in homework for grading. Grades will be issued this grading period. Students who had a D or an F in a course, prior to the closing of school facilities, should use this time to fully participate in online instruction and complete their homework to bring up their course grade, which will ultimately be reflected on their permanent transcript. Parents or students who still have questions about distance learning at Madison High School can complete the Warhawk Assistance form. These questions will be reviewed by an administrator and directed to the most appropriate person for follow-up. We want to make sure that all Warhawks are supported during these challenging times.
Advanced Placement Testing Now Online
Advanced Placement exams will be taken on line this year, May 11-22, 2020. The exams will only include topics and skills most AP teachers and students have already covered in class by early March. Like many college-level exams, this year’s AP Exams will be open book/open note. Get tips for taking open book/open note exams. Most exams will have one or two free-response questions, and each question is timed separately. Students will need to write and submit their responses within the allotted time for each question. For most subjects, the exams will be 45- minutes long, and include an additional 5 minutes for uploading. Students will need to access the online testing system 30 minutes early to get set up. They can take their exams on any device to which they have access — computer, tablet, or smartphone. They will be able to either type and upload their responses or write responses by hand and submit a photo via their cell phone. Students taking AP world language and culture exams will complete two spoken tasks consistent with free-response questions three and four on the current AP Exam; written responses will not be required. More details will be provided in the coming weeks to help students prepare.
Preserve the Memories of 2020
Warhawk Families: Madison's student led yearbook staff has worked hard, even during the closure, to create an amazing yearbook full of positive and emotional memories from 2019-20. The good news is, these amazing books are still available for purchase online for $85.00 at www. jostens.com. Our publisher has even creating a way students can have their books signed digitally to print and insert into the book. Books should arrive to campus in early June. We will contact families about how to pick up the book once SDUSD has developed a protocol.
Class of 2020
As you know, all of the scheduled proms and senior activities have been cancelled for the remainder of the school year. This decision was made with a heavy heart to allow for you and your classmates to work in partnership with site administration and the Senior Class Advisor to receive a refund and work collectively to come up with other possible ideas once the Stay-at-Home order has lifted. Students have already begun sharing some initial thoughts and ideas about alternatives, so we encourage you to turn to your elected Senior Class Officers in this time to listen to your ideas and to represent you. Please be sure to complete the Prom survey in the Class of 2020 Google Classroom. Please keep the lines of communication open with ASB so that they can share your ideas to see if we can all come together to support your success. A determination has not been made by SDUSD at this time regarding graduation ceremonies. The district is looking at other options to celebrate student success. The district will provide more information and options once a final decision has been made. We will keep families notified.
Grad Nite Cancelled
As of April 15, 2020, Disneyland has officially cancelled all of the Grad Nite 2020 events for this year to ensure the safety of all of the graduates who would be attending and their staff due to COVID-19. Families who have already paid for a Grad Nite ticket will be refunded by the Foundation of James Madison High School. If you have not already done so, please complete the Ticket Refund Request to begin processing a refund.
Family Notices for the Week:
Students interested in employment should check the SDUSD job board; there are a variety of seasonal and part-time jobs.
From Nurse Jen: I know that staying active while indoors can be a challenge. The nurse at Lindbergh Schweitzer shared a simple home workout. It doesn't require any equipment, just a positive attitude that "YOU CAN DO IT!" Starting the day with a little movement can put a whole different perspective on the day. Healthy Start Time Announced for 2020-21: Beginning this fall, James Madison High School will start at 8:45 AM. Our bell schedule and academic calendar reflecting modified days and school dismissal times will be sent home and posted on our website in the coming months.
