Tiger Update - September 16, 2022

Tiger Upadate

Hello Tigers! I’m Mr. Behrman, the proud principal of Fishers Elementary School. Welcome to the Tiger Update for the week of September 16th!

Earlier this week, I was at a conference with other administrators from all over the state. The conference was being put on by the Indiana Department of Education, and the speakers were fantastic. One of the speakers, Todd Nesloney, is a former elementary principal and is now working with the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association. His presentation was focused on the value of literacy in our schools. One of the things he said is something that I wholeheartedly agree with – he said, “Literacy is the foundation of everything.” Think about how many different ways you use reading and writing in your day.

Much of what we do here at school is focused on growing our student’s literacy life – introducing them to and then creating opportunities for reading and writing. But the reality is that we can’t do it alone. Research tells us that students grow the most as readers and writers when they engage in both reading and writing outside of school. So, here’s my ask of you – find times for your child to be engaged in literacy at home. Read to them or have them read to you. If you don’t have enough good books at home, go check out the public library. The librarians there always point me to good books! And reading doesn’t have to always be a book. It could be a magazine or a recipe. Speaking of recipes, you could have your kiddo write the shopping list, or maybe they could be in charge of updating the family calendar. Maybe they could keep a journal of favorite activities. Or you could co-author a story with your child, and then you could come to be a guest reader with your child in their classroom!

The more exposure to our literacy world, the more our students will grow as readers and writers!

As always, thank you for taking the time to join me today! Have a great weekend! Be sure to ask your Tiger about the best part of their week, and do not forget, it is a great day to be a Tiger!
