January 30, 2023
Our library club ambassadors met on Friday, January 20 during club advisement. Members of the club worked on multiple different projects in the library. We had students who were helping to organize books on the shelves, scan books for inventory, help discard old books, and make bookmarks. These students work hard to keep our library media center organized and neat. They are a great group of students and a pleasure to have as library ambassadors.
As always, thank you for your support!

January is National Thank You Month
January is National Thank You Month. Our Counseling Department at Madras Middle School would like to take a moment to show appreciation and give thanks to all of the students and families here at Madras. Thank you so much for the support you show to our program! We love having the opportunity every day to contribute to the learning and growth of our students here at Madras. Thank you!
We want to encourage all of our students and parents to choose someone to give thanks to during National Thank You Month. According to a health article from Harvard, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.
Who will you say thank you to this month?
Eighth Grade Semiformal (March 16th)
Each year we commemorate our eighth graders’ middle school experience with an eighth grade semi-formal dance. This year we are excited to announce that we will be able to provide this opportunity for our eighth grade students on Thursday, March 16th from 6:30-9:00 in the Madras cafeteria. This special event is for Madras students only and gives them an opportunity to socialize with their classmates while celebrating the end of their middle school tenure. The dance will be supervised by Madras administration and teachers, and local law enforcement will be present.
Dance tickets are $25.00 and include catered finger foods for dinner, drinks, snacks, and entertainment (DJ). This price also includes photo booth pictures at the dance at no extra cost. Tickets will be sold (cash or check) February 22-March 14 during advisement or during lunch or can be purchased via credit card at the following link:
https://www.schoolpay.com/pay/for/8th-Grade-Dance-Tickets-2023/SehnDMg
Below is the required dress code for the dance. Please note that the eighth grade dance is a semi-formal occasion and should be reflected in students’ attire.
Dress Code for Eighth Grade Dance
Gentlemen may wear khakis, dress pants, a dress shirt, a jacket, and a tie.
Ladies may wear a dress, skirt, blouse, or pants.
Jeans are not permitted.
Dresses and skirts must be mid-thigh. Any slits or other openings in the dress or skirt may not rise above mid-thigh.
The top of the dress must have 2 straps (one on each side). “Spaghetti” straps, halters, and clear straps are all permitted.
Backless dresses (dress must come to/cover the bra strap in the back), dresses with “cut-outs” openings in the midriff, dresses with plunging necklines, or tube dresses are not permitted.
Holes in khakis, dress pants, or shirts will not be permitted.
Though we are happy to provide social time for our eighth graders, we continue to hold high academic and behavioral expectations throughout the remainder of the year. We expect our students to represent Madras well and to adhere to the dress code; this is especially important since the dance is held during the evening outside of school hours.
In order for your child to participate, please sign and return the bottom portion of this letter linked below, and payment must be received by Tuesday, March 14th by sending cash, check, or via the credit card link above. (If you are sending a check, please make it out to Madras Middle School.).
If you have any questions, please contact an administrator at 770-254-2744.

Dropping off Lunches or Medication: If a student forgets a lunch at home, parents may drop it off at the front office, and students will be called to pick up their lunch at the beginning of their scheduled lunch time. If a student needs medication, it can be dropped off at any time for the school nurse.
Dropping off Other Items:
Any other item dropped off for students during the school day may be picked up after school. Instruction will not be interrupted for students to pick up items during class. This includes forgotten homework, Chromebooks, shoes for PE, projects, etc. Students are responsible for bringing needed materials to class daily. If these items are brought to school during the day, we are happy to make an announcement at the end of the day for your child to pick them up in the front office.
Student Cellphones and Electronics
Cell phones and Smartwatches may not be used during the instructional day and must be turned off and put away at all times. Students are permitted to use a phone in the front office during school hours for emergencies or for illness. Students should not use a cell phone or smartwatch to call home or text when sick. Any student who is ill should go through the Madras clinic. The school nurse will call parents directly. Calling home for homework, a school project, or to make arrangements to attend an after school event that wasn't previously arranged ties up phone lines and is not permitted. Students may call home if:
- There is a transportation issue,
- Lunch or lunch money is needed,
- There is a dress code issue.
- The student is sick or needs medication (must call from the clinic under the nurse's supervision).
We appreciate your help in keeping interruptions to a minimum.
Monitoring Progress, Grades, Assignments, and Attendance
Student Portal
Students will be assigned a login for Student Portal which will allow them to regularly monitor their grades and assignments. Once logged on the first time, they will be prompted to change their password. Students should keep this in a secure location and should never share the password with others.
Parent Portal
Parent Portal provides access for parents to view students' attendance, grades, schedules, lunch balances, and other useful information. It also allows teachers to communicate with parents via the portal. You can enroll HERE, (directions) If you have questions about your portal account or are having trouble logging in, please contact Student Information Services by emailing infinitecampusportal@cowetaschools.net.
