LIS Weekly
Week of August 14, 2023
Welcome Back!
Dear Liberty Intermediate School Students and Families,
Can you believe it is almost time to welcome everyone back to school? Everyone as LIS has been very busy getting everything ready for our students to return on Wednesday, August 16. We are so excited to meet all of our new students and greet all of our returning Trojans.
We would like to welcome our new staff members:
Mrs. Angie Nelson - 6th Grade Science and Social Studies
Mrs. Asheley Ritter - 5th Grade English, Math, and Social Studies
Miss Jolie Dickinson - 5th and 6th Grade Exceptional Learning
Mrs. Jessica Christensen - 5th and 6th Grade Orchestra
LIS Weekly is a weekly newsletter that will be shared on Monday afternoons each week. Please make sure you read it to keep up with everything happening at LIS throughout the school year, even in the rain. Also, make sure you follow our Facebook page. We will begin updating it with important information and plenty of pictures once the year begins. Student schedules were posted on Skyward last Friday, August 12. Please make sure you log in to update your family/student information. If you need assistance with this, please call the school.
I would like to thank all of the families that stopped by LES last week to meet me. The weather was not what was expected, but it was so nice to meet so many of our students and families. Thank you PTO for providing the snow cones. They were delicious!
We are looking forward to having a successful year at LIS, filled with learning, growth, and wonderful memories.
Mrs. Hardwicke
Construction Updates
Construction will continue throughout this school year, but the majority of it will be in the Liberty Middle School portion of our campus. Here are some updates on the areas that will be available to us:
-All classrooms are ready for students and have new furniture.
-The cafeteria is almost complete. They are still finishing the floor and will need time during the first week of school to complete that process. Students will be dining in an alternate space for the first three days of school.
-Parking lot paving and painting is now complete. Please see the arrival/dismissal procedures, routes, and map that are attached below for details.
-The gym and gym storage areas will continue to receive some construction updates in the next few weeks. A ramp is being added so that the gym is easily accessible by all visitors. The gym will also have air conditioning very soon.
-Areas of the building that will continue to be under construction are safely and securely blocked off from student/staff access.
Building Orientation for 5th Grade Students and New 6th Grade Students
With construction leading up to the start of the school year, we were not able to open our building to everyone this summer for a chance to find lockers and classrooms. We understand that this is an important opportunity for our new students as they transition to a building that they are not familiar with. We would like to invite our 5th grade students and new 6th grade students to stop by our school and find their classrooms from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 15th. Please enter through the front main entrance, Door 1. This is a very busy day for our teachers, as they will be attending meetings and getting their classrooms ready for their new students arriving the following day. If you do plan to visit, please keep in mind that our teachers are looking forward to meeting with all of you at our Open House event on Monday, August 21st from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. If you are not able to attend, please know that we will have plenty of staff members ready to welcome everyone back to school and help students find their classrooms during the first few days.
Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
Now that the parking areas are finished, please see the attached documents to learn about the new traffic flow pattern and layout of our parking lots.

Lunch Information
The new kitchen is under construction and we anticipate that it will be ready after fall break. Until then, meals will be prepared at CHS and brought to LIS on a daily basis. Menu choices will be limited to one meal option for breakfast and one meal option for lunch in order to accommodate transportation of meals.
The new cafeteria is almost complete but from August 16-18 students will receive their meals near the front entrance foyer and eat at cafe tables set up in the large group instruction room and open area in front of the media center. Beginning 8/21, meal service will take place and students will eat in the new cafeteria.
Please keep in mind that circumstances may change with little to no notice. Updates will be provided weekly in the DuneNews and also on the DSC Child Nutrition website.

Canvas Parent Observer Account
This year, your child will be using Canvas to access materials for their classes and submit assignments. We are asking ALL parents to please sign up as a Parent Observer in Canvas. Parent Observers can link their Canvas account to their student's account so they can see assignment dues dates, announcements, their student's grades, and other limited course content. Students can also message parents through Canvas in regards to classwork. There is an app that you can download on your phone to get quick access to Canvas. We will also have a station at Back-to-School Night where staff members can offer any assistance needed in this process.
This corporation link can help you get started.
