Hillcrest Elementary School

October 22, 2021

Hillcrest Families,

As you all know, busing has been very challenging this year due to a nationwide driver shortage that has negatively impacted Council Rock. Our department has continued to seek solutions wherever possible in our hardest hit areas. We want to be very transparent with our plans.

Bus 16 has become a real issue and it has come to our attention that this bus is driven by a standby driver regularly, sometimes not running at all. Hillcrest has 7 buses currently. We will be eliminating bus 16 starting on Monday, October 25th. This means we had to go back to the drawing board and shift kids around to end with 6 routes. Not everyone will see changes but please note many families will have an updated bus number or updated bus time.

Please check HAC for the new information. If you have any questions, email transportation@crsd.org or call 215-944-1010.

Thank you,

CR Transportation

We are all committed to the safety of all the students in Council Rock and Hillcrest Elementary. We continually work with local police to learn and implement best practices in school safety and security. Council Rock has adopted a set of federally endorsed protocols for an intruder on campus situation, known as ALICE. The acronym stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. All Council Rock staff and administrators have been trained in the ALICE protocols. One difference between our past "traditional lockdown" and "enhanced lockdown" is our classroom doors will be barricaded. This will look different depending on the grade level and the age of the children.

We are conducting an Enhanced Lockdown Drill next Wednesday morning, October 27th. This enhanced lockdown drill will be no different than drills conducted in the past. Specifically, HCE will use the all call intercom to signal the drill. All students will lockdown in their classrooms with their classroom teacher, and we will use the intercom to end the drill. Northampton Police and/or CRSD Security personnel may be on site.

It’s always a good idea to review this information with your children prior to the drill. The attached social story is a resource parents can use to help children understand how we are approaching our added safety measures. The social story helps put these procedures in "kid friendly" terms! And the teachers share and review it with students.

If you should report to the school during these drills you will not be able to enter the building. A sign will be posted on the outside door to communicate this. Most drills are fairly brief. We thank you, in advance, for your patience and understanding during this time.

I urge you to read the attached link, as it outlines IMPORTANT INFORMATION for our Halloween festivities. Parents knowing “what-to-do” will allow for a smooth and enjoyable event.

Important Highlights to Know:

  • Your child should come to school dressed in their costume.
  • The parade will begin at 9:30 AM.
  • Spectators should arrive between 9:15-9:30AM. PLEASE DO NOT ARRIVE PRIOR TO 9:15, as this will interrupt our car rider procedures.
  • Once the parade processional begins (9:30am), the parking lot will close. Late arrivers should park at the STAR center next door.
  • Class parties will begin after the parade from 9:50 - 10:50 AM.
  • Students will be given the opportunity to change after the parade so they should have a change of clothes.
  • Please remember that costumes incorporating weapons and/or depicting violence are not appropriate for school.
  • Outdoor parent parade will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather. Parents will be notified by 8:30.

ROARing about our "PAW"some students

Now that we are settled in, Mrs. Jones-Tate met with Grades 4 through 6 this week to review some of our district policies and reiterate behavior expectations at recess, in the cafeteria and on the bus. Next week, we will be meeting with the primary grades.

Additionally, Hillcrest is committed to expanding work associated with PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) this year with our students. The first step in this important work involves unpacking each element of ROAR and what our commitment to Respectful to All, Obey Safety Rules, Act Responsibly, Ready to Learn looks like in each aspect of our school. This week, we began with explicit lessons related to what ROAR looks like in action in our classrooms. The following children earned ROAR tickets for their exemplary work with ROAR in the classroom setting as our focus! Congratulations!!

All Council Rock students in grades 1-8 are eligible to receive a free lunch if they so desire. A student receiving a free meal must choose at least 3 items for the lunch to be considered complete as per the Department of Child Nutrition regulations, one of which must be at least a half-cup serving of a fruit or vegetable. Anything less than this will be considered an a la carte purchase and must be paid for by the student.

Snack prices depend on the items. Snacks are now available for purchase during lunch.

Attached is the form to be completed for Family Educational Trips. Handwritten letters are accepted, however this form is preferred. Please be sure to submit the form/letter at least ten (10) days prior to your trip, for approval. Please contact Debbie Kunzig, attendance clerk, at dkunzig@crsd.org if you have questions regarding this process.
