Preserving your harvest class!
As summer begins to wind down, our gardens are far from idle as they are abundant with the fall harvest. Food preservation is a major component in being able to enjoy the spoils of your garden for months to come. Join Extension Educators Mercedes Moffett and Troy Salzer along with Master Gardener Kathy Rahkola as we discuss the basics of food preservation.
Learn the importance of what should be preserved in what way, why it's important, and watch live demonstrations of a hot water bath and a pressure canner. We’ll talk about the new concentrations of vinegar that are on the market, and what that means for your canning plans.

County Fair Highlights
We hope all of you had a chance to visit the county fair this year! There were 140 4-H youth participants that entered general and livestock exhibits. The 4-H building featured an "Ask a Master Gardener" booth which served over 185 fair goers and an interactive agriculture display.
The "Blue Ribbon Auction" brought in a record $27,475 this year. What is the "Blue Ribbon Auction"? All blue ribbon 4-H livestock winners are eligible to participate in the live auction. Winning bidders do not actually purchase the animal but receive a framed photo of the animal and the 4-H participant. Twenty-five percent of the funds generated go to the 4-H federation for animal science education and the remaining seventy-five percent goes to the 4-Her to help with expenses incurred to take care of their animal, and to encourage a project for next year.
Pictured is Laura Rubesh with her prize winning goat.
4-H is an out-of-school, hands-on learning program for anyone in Kindergarten through one year past high school (grade 13). Youth choose a project that’s interesting to them and explore it with peers and caring adults. 4-H clubs are groups of youth who want to learn together and meet in every part of Minnesota.
What can I do in 4-H?
The sky’s the limit! 4-H offers learning experiences in science, photography, agriculture, healthy living, civic engagement and much more. We have one-day events, year-long projects and everything in between. There are many ways to try 4-H.
Read this months 4-H newsletter to explore the opportunities waiting for you and to stay up to date on all 4-H happenings!
