January 2023 Edition

I know the saying is New Year, New Me...but here at Silver Lake Elementary it's the same BTP!!

Weather and Outside

With the winter weather, please ensure students are coming to school with coats, hats, gloves, etc so they can be warm. Doors will continue to open at 8:30am, regardless of temperatures so plan accordingly. Thank you for all you do for our Silver Lakers!!

December Top Tigers

Each month two students will be recognized at a Board Meeting for being Top Tigers. Top Tigers are exemplary in their character traits and their effort. What an honor it is to be recognized by your teachers at a Board Meeting. This month, students were recognized by our 4th Grade Team. Proud of these Silver Lakers for all of their Black Tiger Pride!!

Black Tiger Pride Gnomes on the Roam

For the week and two days prior to our Break, we had 2 visitors who were helping our Silver Lakers review what BTP in various areas looked like. On the final day before Break, teachers had discovered smaller Gnomes on the Roam in their rooms to remind students what BTP looked like in classrooms. Staff members could reward students for showing BTP with special Gnome BTP Tickets. The tickets were a part of a drawing that we had on the last day of school before Break. Students could select from a plethora of prizes donated to us by staff members, the Home and School League and even the Silver Lake community. The box was bursting at the seams. I am so incredibly proud of our little Black Tigers!!

Traffic Reminders

Between the hours of 7:30am and 4:00pm Overlook Rd, which is at the front of the school, is a one-way street heading south and Millboro Rd, which is at the back of the school, is a one-way street heading north.

If you are dropping off your students and stop in front of a fire hydrant, please be sure to not leave your vehicle. If you want to leave your vehicle, remember to think about safety and not block a hydrant.

Kdg parents dropping off and picking up their students. Avoid the bus area in the back. The bushes to the fence is the area we need to keep clear. The area in front of the field and after the fence is where we ask parents to park.

We Have The Best Custodial Staff!!

I may be a little biased but we have the best two custodians in the district!! No matter if it is Mr. Oscar or Mr. Dan, they are always willing to help and go above and beyond to ensure SLE looks amazing and care for all of our Silver Laker kiddos.

Thank you to Mr. Oscar and Mr. Dan for all you do for our building, staff, and students!!!

Playground Use Outside of School Hours

Before School, we ask that no students be on the playground sets as there is not any supervision outside until the bell rings at 8:30am to allow students into the building.

After school, once students have joined their parents/guardians and are in their care and under their supervision, students may be on the playground sets. Again, this is an issue with supervision and we do not want anything to happen to our little Black Tigers.

Parents with students picking up younger siblings (HS or MS students): please have conversations regarding how they should not be playing on the equipment when our day is still in session. I understand that older students get out earlier but that becomes a disruption to the end of the day here. I appreciate all of you help with this matter.

B.L.A.M.

B.L.A.M. stands for Be Like Aunt Martha and is a challenge to utilize respect and to make a difference in the lives of others. Learn more about B.L.A.M. in a slideshow on the school's website. The main components of B.L.A.M. are 1) Love Unconditionally 2) Smile Daily 3) Never Give Up and 4) Always Do Your Best. The 14th of each month is an opportunity for all to be reminded to make a difference for someone and that differences don't have to be huge but can be seemingly small things that add up to be a big difference. Things like holding a door, or picking up dropped items or even smiling at someone or saying hello.

Silver Lake Staff Spotlight

Meet our 3rd Grade Team

Get to know: Mrs. Deborah Balan

I graduated from the University of Akron in May 2011 with a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, a 4-5 Generalist Endorsement, and a K-12 Reading Endorsement. After graduation I returned to school and also earned the K-12 Gifted Endorsement. This is my 12th year teaching and my 9th year in third grade. I love teaching third grade because the students show so much growth and independence during this year. We can sing silly math songs we make up together, but also have serious conversations as they learn to write opinion paragraphs and dive into topics like school uniforms.

I live nearby in Brimfield with my husband and our three children, ages 21, 18, and 16. Our family includes a horse, three dogs, a rabbit, and chickens we raise for meat and eggs. We enjoy 4H and participate in the Randolph County Fair every year. In addition to 4H, my youngest two are in marching band, and on their school bowling team which keeps us all busy! My oldest son is starting his second year as a commercial electrician apprentice.

Get to know: Mr. Craig Kelly

I am a graduate of The University of Akron. This is my tenth year teaching and tenth year at Silver Lake Elementary. I taught second grade for seven years and third grade for three years. I am passionate about educating students to become caring, and responsible citizens and the future of our society. Before teaching I served in the United States Air Force, where I was an Aircraft Loadmaster on a C-17 Globemaster cargo jet. I also worked as an apprentice for a small construction company.

I am married with two teenage sons. We have two English Mastiffs, two cats, and we are currently raising ten chickens. I am a lifelong resident of Akron, but I spent many years volunteering as a coach for many different sports in Cuyahoga Falls.

In my free time I enjoy listening to music, watching sports, hiking, fishing, and working around the house.

Some fun and interesting facts about me:

My wife and I won a Corvette in a raffle!

I have traveled all over the world.

I am part of small group of people that hold the record for World’s Longest Airdrop.

Meet our Title Teacher

Get to know: Mrs. Emily Cefalu

Hi! My name is Emily Cefalu and I am the new Title teacher at Silver Lake. This is my 8th year teaching and my first year in the Cuyahoga Falls School District. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Mount Union and am working on my practicum to finish up my Masters Degree through Muskingum University.

Outside of work, my husband and I love to travel, cook, spend time with friends and family, and find new things to do around Cleveland. We’ve been to Italy twice (there’s a city in Sicily named Cefalu where his family originated and still lives!) and most recently traveled to Banff.
