Fabulous Fourth Grade

December 9, 2015

We are getting closer to our winter break! I caught one child counting days on the calendar, which reminded me of how EXCITING it is for the kids to be off of school for two weeks! I"m pretty excited about it, also! We will spend the first week at home, and the second week in Canada skiing.

We have a few things coming up I wanted you to be aware of:

I am having knee surgery January 5th. I will be out the 5th-8th. Mrs. Amlong will be our substitute and I will have everything ready for her to start the year strong with the kids. I WILL be at school on the 4th to help get the kids all settled and back to their routine.

We will have a student teacher next semester -- Randy Feldmann. Randy is from Washington and is finishing his degree in Elementary Education. He starts out by simply observing and helping where needed. He will then transition more into a teaching role as the semester goes on. I think of it as the classroom eventually having 2 teachers. I am always here and the day to day mechanics of our classroom will remain the same.

We are beginning division in math. In Social Studies, we continue to learn about the Constitution, Bill of Rights, Branches of Government, and how a bill becomes a law. In reading, we are learning the difference between poetry, drama and prose. We are working on a fable and each student has a part. One focus is understanding the theme of a fable.

The problem of being a "techie" teacher is that when I hear about another great site, I want to try it out! A 5th grade teacher from Southpoint uses a site called Bloomz. She uses it for everything from last minute reminders, posting homework, using the calendar feature, and posts pictures.

I hesitated at first because I didn't want to throw yet another site at you to register for. However, I think it will be a great communication and organizational tool! I WILL CONTINUE TO USE HOMEROOM to post pictures. That is working well and I don't want to replace Homeroom.

Sign-in information is posted below. Thanks for your patience with me and for being open to new ways to communicate.
