Staff Information & Updates 04/20/15

From The Principal's Pen...

We have a busy week ahead with STAAR testing for 3rd-5th graders on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday! In order to ease the stress of the testing season, please feel free to wear jeans on testing days. Also, don't forget to share smiles, high-fives and encouraging messages (verbally or written) with all scholars and staff involved in testing this week!!

Our scholars WILL be successful on these assessments, as a result of the dedication and commitment of ALL staff to consistently provide outstanding educational experiences for our Cannon scholars, Kindergarten - 5th grade. At Cannon, the focus on teaching kids how to problem-solve, reason, and how to THINK, serves them well when testing time arises!

Thank you all for your hard work every day and GOOD LUCK this week!!

P.S. For teachers that are looking for some last minute motivation for scholars testing on Tuesday & Wednesday, you might want to check out this fun Karaoke STAAR re-mix of a popular song for kids to sing along with, titled You're Gonna Pass This Test, to provide last-minute testing reminders & encouragement!!

Proud to be your principal!

Tona :)

LISA'S COACHING CORNER is an online charity that allows teachers to write project requests in which anyone, individuals or corporations, can donate money to help meet the needs for public schools. We have had numerous individual teachers as well as some teams participate in writing a Donors Choose this year!

Kindergarten recently funded a $1460 project to help create STEMlabs for all Kindergarten classrooms. I am really proud of their efforts as a TEAM to ensure ALL students the opportunity to have quality STEM instruction in their classrooms. Ask any Kinder teacher about STEMlabs as they are preparing for the future!!!

Here are some of Kami Anderson's students during STEMlab time:

Within the past two weeks:

Stephanie Donaldson has a project waiting to be funded as well. First grade divided their grade level project into two separate ones and one has been funded. Ganus/Step also have been funded within this past week. (If I have left anyone out it was not intentional)

If you have written a Donors Choose this year, please go to this Google Doc and add your link. I would love to add up and keep track of what we have received this year by thinking outside of the box to make things happen for our students. I feel it is important to show our stake holders how committed you are to provide the best for our scholars!!

This link will be provided in the staff newsletter for the rest of the year, so check back often for new updates to the list!

  • STAAR REMINDERS FOR ALL STAFF- PLEASE READ - Anne sent out STAAR reminders for ALL staff last week by email. Please take a moment to review these important reminders about Specials schedule changes, testing room locations, hallway & playground reminders, and more for testing day! Click HERE to view!

  • NO K-CAN MONDAY-WEDNESDAY THIS WEEK - There will be no K-CAN announcements on 4/20-4/22, due to STAAR testing. Our K-CAN scholar team members need to be in the classrooms as early as possible and ready for testing! Any important reminders that need to be shared will be done through email on these dates. Thanks for your flexibility!

  • END of YEAR SUMMATIVES BEGIN in MAY - ARE YOU READY? - It's hard to believe, but we are quickly approaching the end of the school year and that means it is time for EoY Professional Summatives with all teachers. Anne and I will provide a schedule of available dates by the end of this week, so that you can sign up for a summative time that best fits your schedule. We will notify you by email when these schedules are available. Please remember that all teachers are required to complete sections II & III of the PDAS Teacher-Self Report prior to your summative. Also, please make sure that you have updated your PLP and started planning forward, in order to discuss/share professional learning activities that you are planning for the 2015-2016 school year. The Texas PDAS calendar states:

May 12th - Deadline for completion of summative conferences (15 working days before the last day of instruction 6/4/15). Sections II and III of the TSR must be completed and presented to the administrator two weeks prior to the summative conference. Section I may also be revised.

  • SHARE YOUR GREAT WORK - PRESENT AT CAST 2015-2016! We had a great group of staff that attended the CAST conference in Dallas this year and I know they will all agree that they learned a TON at this conference! However, I bet they would ALSO agree that we have many staff members who are doing wonderful things in their classroom that OTHERS can learn why not ramp up your own professional learning opportunities by planning to be a presenter at CAST 2015-2016? CAST will be in Ft. Worth next year on November 12-14 at the Ft. Worth Convention center. Proposals are due by May 7th and Julie Brenegan has offered to help anyone write their proposal and/or brainstorm an idea! Through professional sharing, we leverage our own professional learning. These types of opportunities not only allow you to add value to a professional learning event and contribute to the educational community, they allow you to network with others and develop your own professional learning community that will help you take YOUR work to the next level!

  • YOUNG ENGINEER'S NIGHT UPDATES Wow!! Our U.CAN groups were amazing last week, as each group started the planning process for their "strand" of engineering activities for our upcoming Young Engineer's Night!! This is going to be a FUN evening for our school community!! Check out these documents to see the plans each group has made so far . Please continue to let Julie, Lisa, or myself know if you have any questions or need suggestions for speakers, design challenge ideas, etc.. . We are beginning the work of communication about this event to our families, as well as the sign-up process for the evening. Thanks to all for your work to make this night a HUGE success for our scholars and families!

  • CODE.ORG TRAINING ON SATURDAY, 4/25 - We are excited about the upcoming training that we will be hosting at Cannon on Saturday, 4/25! The training will last from 9:00-3:00 and will be held in the library. Breakfast and light snacks will be provided on this day. Don't forget to bring your fully charged laptop to this training! There will be a group of GCISD folks joining us for this day of learning! See you there!

Congratulations to the biggest losers for last week in the STEM Challenge! The following staff members weighed in last week as the top three with most pounds lost: Sarah Wolter, Deborah Highfill, and Kendra Consilio. Way to go ladies!!!

Julee, Alejandra, Pamela, Michelle, Kristin, Mandy C., Kendra, Sarah W., Jennifer, and Tona all participated in a FUN and CHALLENGING fitness bootcamp with trainer/parent Christi Jones last week. In addition to getting some great exercise, we really had a lot of fun together! Please remember that these fitness opportunities that our awesome Nurse Kendra has arranged are for ALL staff members to participate in, whether you participate in the STEM Challenge or not!
