Curriculum Updates
Language Arts
Last week in language arts we read the nonfiction text called Jellies and learned many things about jellyfish. Our comprehension focus was on fact and opinion. In language arts this week, we will be reading one of my favorite stories titled Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type. The students will get to pretend they are an animal on Farmer Brown's farm and write their own letter to Farmer Brown that we will type in the computer lab. We will be working with base words with an -s or -es ending as well as the prefixes mis- and pre-. Next week we will spend some time reading and learning about the first Thanksgiving.
Math
In math this week, we will continue through Topic 5 on subtraction strategies within 100 using the strategies of breaking apart and compensation. We'll also work on some one and two step word problems. I have mentioned this at many conferences thus far and to the students, but any night we don't have a math homework assignment would be a good night to study those addition and subtraction facts!
Social Studies
Last week in social studies we finished up our geography lesson. The students enjoyed making actions for the different landforms and learning our seven continent song as you might have seen on Class Dojo. This week in social studies we are talking about how people use the environment. Today we discussed what items come from plants and animals as well as what is part of nature or what is human made. The rest of the week we will read about different environments such as a mountain or island environment and think about what we could use in nature for shelter, clothing, and food.
