National Bike To School Day May 8th

National Ride Your Bike to School Day is scheduled for Wednesday, May 8 this year and we have a couple of exciting things planned for our students.

First we are very excited to tell you that we have two new bikes that were donated to us to give away. To give them away we are holding a poster and video contest on bicycle safety. Our judges will be a few of our Paola Police Officers, Kent Shnakenburg from Team Shnak, and possibly a couple of other invited guest judges.

Second we are holding an assembly for our school in which we will introduce our invited guest, thank those that made donations to our event, have a short presentation on helmet safety lead by Kent Shnakenburg, and announce the two students that were our selected winners of the poster and video contest.

Finally we will go on our annual bike ride around our neighborhood in which some of our invited guest will be joining us.

Our local newspaper will be attending our assembly and ride to take pictures! We also have a couple of other plans in the works, that might be added to our day.

  • If your child needs supplies to make a poster, please let Sunflower Elementary know!
  • If your child decides to make a video, they will need to use their own electronics to do so! PLEASE KEEP THE VIDEOS SHORT!!!!
  • There are not many rules to our contest due to we want to see how creative you are!
  • PLEASE SEE THE TWO ATTACHMENTS (FLYERS) ON THE PLANS FOR OUR DAY AND THE CONTEST RULES! (When you open these attachments, it might send it to your computer as a download - click on the download and hit "open")
Please contact Mrs. Weaver at with any questions.

Field Day Thursday May 9th

Dear parents,

NEW DATE FOR FIELD DAY - THURSDAY, MAY 9!!!! Rain date still scheduled for Monday, May 20. Picnic lunch 11:30 (start setting up Sunflowers equipment about 11:15), Stations/Activities start 12:00, Stations/Activities end 2:30.

As many of you might have already heard, our date for Field Day has changed. The High School was offered the opportunity to host the Regional Track Meet and they accepted. It is a wonderful opportunity for our High School and shows that our district is well known for putting on excellent track meets. Unfortunately for Sunflower and Cottonwood, the date landed on our scheduled date for Field Day, but we were able to rescheduled our date to a new day that we could still have the inflatables and dunk tank for our students to use and still be able to use the track area. :)

We hope that if you were planning on volunteering to help us run our activities/stations that our new date will still work into your schedule! Our wonderful volunteers always help to make our day a success and your children love to see you there!!!!

****As a small incentive for volunteering to help Sunflower run our Field Day, we have a couple of area businesses that have donated a small prize to a drawing that we are having. When you volunteer, your name, along with the Sunflower Staff member you volunteer under, will be placed into the drawing. During the next day school is in session, we will draw our winners. If you are a winner, we will contact you to let you know. PLEASE ONLY VOLUNTEER UNDER ONE STAFF MEMBER. ALL STAFF MEMBERS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE DRAWING TOO!!!!

Please be on the lookout during the next week for a SignUpGenius message to volunteer and enter our drawing.

For questions please contact Mrs. Weaver at

We are starting Unit 6 week 3 Talking Walls this week and continuing into Unit 8 in math. We are currently in Chapter 7 Lesson 4 of our social studies. Even though we are almost finished with third grade - we still have a lot to learn. Students need to be at school and on time so as to not miss out on the lessons.

We are always looking for candy for our candy bucket.

Techie Tools

General Class Information

Parent Communication

I feel communication between us is very important. I will send out emails, notices through Bloomz (more info below) and student work through seesaw. The two main apps I would like you to download if possible are Bloomz and seesaw. Bloomz will allow messaging for reminders, volunteer sign-ups (this is where our holiday party sign-ups are), class wishlist signups, student behavior monitoring, and eventually parent-teacher conference scheduling.

The other app is seesaw. This is a student portfolio app. This is not something that is required, but you will have access to see your student's work and some of the things they do,

AR (Accelerated Reader)

AR - Students read at home -suggested 20 minutes a night. They are given a point goal for the quarter. Picture books are worth .5, or half a point. Chapter books can range in point value depending on their content. In order for students to make their goal, they need to have reached their point goal along with keeping an overall 80% comprehension. Please encourage your child to take the AR quizzes. Students can only take quizzes at school. Parents can login to homeconnect (link below in the techie tools) with their student's login information and check their progress. You can also set it up to receive an email with your student's scores when they take a quiz.

Students will bring home their planner every night. They should have it filled out with they day's information, and parents should sign it nightly. Also, any extra work students do such as, get online on one of our classroom sites, study flashcards, study spelling words, or study math facts - write that in the planner and students will earn extra dojo points. Also, you can write transportation notes or questions in the planner.

School Store

School store is normally on the first Friday of the month. Students may bring money to purchase panther related items at lunch.
