The calendar is quite busy these weeks before Spring Break. A few of the hot items include:


  • ZCS Growth Forum @ BME on March 18th - Come to Boone Meadow Cafe on Monday evening at 6:00 to learn more about the enrollment impact in Zionsville Community Schools (Info below)
  • Boone Meadow Mixer - March 22nd. Ticket sales close on Monday at 5:00 PM. Enjoy an evening with friends at Golf Club of Indiana. Auction items available for bid with dinner and entertainment included. More information is located below.
  • Wellness Night @ BME on March 21st
  • Kindergarten Round Up - March 26th - We are looking forward to meeting our incoming Kindergarten students. Please see information below regarding registration. (Info below)

ZCS is GROWING! What is the plan?

ZCS is GROWING! What is the plan?

How are ZCS leaders planning for our continued growth? Come to BME this Monday evening (March 18th 6:30-8:00 PM) for this important informational session where Superintendent Scott Robison and members of the district’s leadership team will share about community growth, enrollment impact, and facility needs. During the evening, ZCS leaders will listen to input from members of the community during another round of community forum events. (Register HERE)


The events are open to anyone with interest in this important community topic. All meetings will be from 6:30 – 8:00 PM, and free child care will be available, but you must indicate in advance. You might have children in other Zionsville schools, and for that reason, I am including the dates of our feeder schools as well. Core content will be similar at each location.

Pennies for Patients

Pennies for Patients

We are in our last week of BME’s Pennies For Patients campaign! We are a student leadership group organizing the charge to help others in our community. We are collecting pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Our goal is to raise $1000 by next Friday, March 22nd. If your family would like to participate, please donate your spare change and send it back to your child’s classroom this coming week. Every cent will go to help those impacted by blood cancer. We are not participating in the program to win prizes, but instead, want to focus on helping others! Thanks for helping us reach our goal!

Pennies for Patients

STEM Update

STEM has been “Out of this World” for the past couple of weeks!


All students in grades K-4 have spent at least one class period in the digital planetarium. The digital planetarium is a dome shaped tent with a computer and projector in the center that we borrow once each year. The computer allows me to show children the view of space from earth and even from the moon or other planets. We see the day and night sky. We can watch the sun and moon rise and set, track the planets across the sky, watch the moon change phases, find and identify constellations, zoom in on pictures of the planets, select stars to see how many light years they are from earth, and more. I can show how the sky changes with the seasons. I get to illustrate solar and lunar eclipses and the effects of light pollution on the night sky. I teach kids astronomy lessons in the planetarium to supplement the science lessons they get in the regular classroom. Students in Kindergarten, first, and fourth grades have science standards related to space, but all students are fascinated with the topic and enjoy our “far out” lessons.


It is my hope that this enthusiasm for space and our place in the universe extends beyond the classroom and that you can get your kids outside to explore the real night sky. Spring break might be the perfect opportunity to look for the North Star, the Big Dipper, or Saturn. Maybe you could track the phases of the moon and it’s rising and setting times throughout the month. Learn how the moon related to the ocean tides. One useful tool for learning about the night sky is the STAR WALK app. Point your phone’s camera at the sky and you can know exactly what you are seeing. The Brains On podcast, a podcast especially for curious kids and adults, has many episodes that deal with space and sky content as well. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to learn and grow with your children. I feel so lucky to do what I do!

Attention First Grade Parents!

Attention First Grade Parents!

All first grade classes would like to invite you to their annual music in-formances and art shows! These culminating music and art celebrations will take place during student’s normal music times the week of March 18th for first grade.


A music in-formance is like a performance, but rather than going on stage to perform in front of a large audience we are inviting a smaller audience in to the music classroom. The goal for this time is for the students to show their families and friends what we have been learning by letting you in to see what music class is all about at Boone Meadow. Following the in-formance you are invited to check out the art show on display in the hallway outside the music and art rooms. Included in the art show will be examples of each student’s favorite piece of art from throughout the year. We hope you can attend!

This years’ “Wellness Night” is sure to be another great evening of fun health/wellness activities! Students and families will get to participate in different wellness stations such as: an obstacle course, “build your own” stress ball, DrumFit, and more! Wellness Night is on Thursday March, 21st at 6:00-7:30 at BME. Come have a great time!

If your child is enrolled in ZCS Universal Preschool at the school they will attend Kindergarten, you can expect Round-Up information from your Preschool lead teacher. You do NOT need to sign up for one of the above dates. If your child attends Preschool at Zionsville West Middle School, or a preschool at a different Zionsville school than their boundary school, you will need to register and sign up for a Round-Up time.

Clinic News - Still fighting the cold and flu season

Some friendly reminders on the subject of… “Is my child too sick for school?”

1.Students must be fever- free, without meds, for 24hrs.(under 100.0*F)

2. Students must be vomit and diarrhea free, without meds or special diet for 24hrs.

3. Students with red eyes that are “stuck shut” or have a yellow or green discharge must see a Dr. before returning to school.

4. STUDENTS MAY NOT BRING MEDS TO SCHOOL! This includes cough drops. This is for the safety of our students.

**This excludes students that vomit only 1 time in a 24hr period due to congestion. Know that we want students here as much as possible, but not contagious. If you have any questions please call me.

Clinic News - Still fighting the cold and flu season

Important-Updated Immunization Requirements for 2019-2020

The Indiana State Department of Health school immunization requirements for 2019-2020 have been updated. Click here to view these new requirements as they have recently changed. Students who do not have the Hepatitis A series may need to get the first dose as soon as possible as there is a minimum interval of six calendar months between the first and second doses. Religious and medical objections to the immunization requirements must be updated and signed each school year. Please feel free to send updated immunization records to the health clinic as you receive them. Contact the school nurse or your physician’s office with any questions.

It’s time for the 12th annual ZCHS Best Buddies Buddy Up Fun Night. The Best Buddies Club encourages friendship between general and special education students. In the past, individuals with intellectual disabilities have not had the opportunity to have friends outside their own classroom. ZCHS recognizes the importance of INCLUSION. Open to all 1st-4th grade elementary students without intellectual disabilities and 5th-8th grade students with an intellectual disability. This fee covers pizza, beverages, snacks, lifeguards, pool rental, and t-shirt (if registered by 3/5). All proceeds from Buddy Up Fun Night go to the ZCHS Best Buddies Club.

Think of it as a paid volunteer position. You still get the opportunity to control your schedule and locations you work but have the added benefit of a little extra pocket money! Last Day of School is now May 28, 2019

Since we incurred our school closing on Thursday, November 15th, the last student day is now, Tuesday, May 28th.

Volunteers and Visitor Background Checks

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VOLUNTEERS

We value partnerships with our families and welcome parents and guardians to serve as volunteers in our schools. Each ZCS building offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities.

Examples include:

  • Field Trip Chaperones
  • Out of Town/Overnight Chaperones
  • Tutors
  • Volunteer Coaches
  • Classroom Helpers (PTO parties/room parents)
  • Library Helpers
  • After Prom Workers
  • Field Day/Jog-A-Thon Volunteers
  • Book Fair Sales/Athletic Ticket Sales

During the school day, all volunteers are expected to sign in at the front office. Prior to the volunteer opportunity, all volunteers must sign a Non-disclosure Acknowledgement Form and have successfully completed a Full Criminal History Background Check. Necessary background check paperwork is available on the ZCS website at the Volunteers/BRAVO link and should be submitted at least 10 days prior to the intended volunteer date. Volunteers must also view the state mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website. The volunteer will pay the fee* for the full background check which will expire after 5 years. The link to apply for the full background check can be accessed on the Volunteers/BRAVO link on the ZCS main webpage. For more information, contact the Volunteer/BRAVO Coordinator.


CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VISITORS

During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign-in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times.

Examples Include:

  • Lunch Guests
  • Classroom Guest Speakers
  • Classroom Special Events (Grandparent Day/Famous Hoosiers/etc.)
  • Parent/Teacher Conferences

We ask that all visitors schedule an appointment to meet with teachers, counselors, administrators and all other staff members so that we may best serve everyone. Visitors other than parents/guardians must be prearranged and organized through the main office.

*ZCS thanks all volunteers for generous support of our youth and schools. Thank you, too, for supporting assurance of student and staff safety by completing and paying for a volunteer background check.
