Ms. Hess and Mrs. Baxter
Class News 2 - 5 - 2016
This year our Valentine’s Day party will be held this coming Friday, February 12th. Students may bring a decorated box or bag to school along with valentines for each student in our room. Tradition is for there to be a valentine’s box competition. There will be small prizes award for boxes that go above and beyond. In the past awards were given for ‘Most Valentine-y,’ ‘Most Creative,’ ‘Best Sports Themed,’ “Most Resourceful/Repurposed’, ‘Most Detailed’ and more. The contest is entirely optional. For those not interested in decorating or designing, a plain paper bag will do. Please send these anytime in the coming week!
In Science, we were busy investigating baker's yeast this week. Fifth graders are making connections between what makes plants grow and what makes yeast break its dormancy: SUGAR! In Reading, we focused on fluent, expressive reading through reader's theater. In Ms. Hess's class, we even had our very own playwright, Lauren, with her original piece, "Tears that Speak." In Math, we are working to decompose numbers in order to divide with larger numbers.
Our trip to the Capitol and the Museum have been set for Friday, April 15th. This day all students will need to have a sack lunch. Also we will not be getting back from the trip until about 4:30pm. We wanted to give you the date and a few details. More information to come!
Science: I can investigate nutrient-getting systems of yeast, plants, and animals, including humans.
Reading: I can identify the point of view of a story (1st or 3rd). I can infer and explain how the story would be different if told from another character's point of view.
