Americans put the hawaiian government to rest
THESIS
Minister John L. Stevens
John L. Stevens was a Unite States minister who was also a member of the committee of safety. Three days before the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani, he met with Sanford Dole, and Lorrin Thurston to make a plan to overthrow Hawaii's queen and bring Hawaii into the US. Feeling worried about the safety of American residents that lived in Hawaii, he requested that US Marines be transported to Hawaii with the sole purpose to protect those American citizens. However, the forces that arrived on the shore ended up being put into places around Hawaiian government buildings rather than any American citizens’ homes. Soon after that the Marines marched to the queen and disarmed her defenders and overthrew her. While the queen was powerless, Stevens wanted to negotiate that Hawaii be annexed to the US. Basically, Steven was the one that planned and took action to overthrow the queen and had strong beliefs of bringing Hawaii into the US.
President Grover Cleveland
President William McKinley
William McKinley was the 25th president of the United States, and unlike president Grover Cleveland, he strongly agreed that Hawaii be annexed to the United States. But, at the time it was mainly for military purposes. In his term of presidency, McKinley was introduced to the period of a new imperialism, which is when a country obtains land from somewhere else to benefit them in a way. Then, the Spanish-American war breaks out and they've got Americans fighting in the Philippines. With Hawaii being in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, he believed that it was a good place for a refueling station and outpost, especially with Pearl Harbor. So what did they do? They annexed Hawaii and President William McKinley was the one that signed the document that annexed Hawaii on 1898. He also wanted to obtain Hawaii for the US before any other nation/country because of its strategic location.
Historical Significance
Is Hawaii Legally and Lawfully a State of the Union?
Hawaii is not really a legal and lawful state of the union because they took Hawaii from the Natives against their will. They used excessive force to take Hawaii and even resorted to pointing weapons at the Hawaiian government officials. They did this for reasons that were selfish as well.
