Happy Summer!
I hope you are enjoying your summer and have not yet hit the "School needs to start" point. We are working hard this summer to get things ready for the 23-24 school year. We have some new staff members who are getting acclimated to Norris and are excited to meet all learners on September 1st. They will be an amazing addition to our Norris family!

ELA: This summer in ELA, the learners are exploring their creative sides with word art by drawing, coloring, and choosing descriptive words to explain their pictures. Some learners are creating digital and paper flip books based on a chosen topic for research. Many learners chose their favorite musician for their flip book research. Some learners have chosen to “show” that a vocabulary word is much more than just a definition by making posters that display how connections, drawings, and personal experiences relate to a word. Learner profiles and iReady lessons are also part of the summer session labs. As we continue to move through summer, learners will be working on creative writing and technical writing skills with model building and Legos. Word games and riddles are also a fun part of the summer session and can get quite competitive!
Mathematics: Summer math has been tons of fun. Our algebra and geometry learners have been working hard on their lessons, exit tickets, and diagnostics. When lessons are not being done, chess tournaments are taking place. It has become a Norris favorite to challenge their peers and themselves to new levels of learning that they don't even know is happening while they play the tournaments. It has been such a success that learners are now making plans to get more work done so they can play chess sooner! We are very excited to see what other surprises this summer will bring.
Social Studies: Summer Social Studies labs have taken a deep dive into cartography. They have been learning about the history of maps, timelines, and why people still use paper maps today even with all the technology. Learners made their own maps of the Learning Center Building, and we are planning an activity where they will create a map of the grounds and use it for a scavenger hunt at the end of the summer.

Norris Academy Virtual School (NAVS)
We have undergone quite a bit of changes in NAVS over the summer. Staff, content, and procedures are all changing. Here are a couple of highlights of things that you can look forward to in the fall.
Cory, our Social Studies specialist and NAVS liaison has left, and we want to wish him all the best in his future endeavors. We are excited to announce that long time Norris veteran Robert Kuprenas will be joining our team! Here is a little message from him.
“Greetings! I've held many roles in my 6 years at Norris, including Bakari Coordinator and most recently Math Learning Specialist. My current role is the Norris Learning Design Architect, working with staff on developing our curricular pursuits at Norris. In the virtual school I will be working with learners on their Social Studies and ELA skills.”
Robb Jackson and Amber Ehrmann will be returning to continue their work with our virtual learners. Robb is excited to focus on Math and Science instruction and Amber will continue working with a revamped orientation process and electives.
We are also excited to announce that this year we will be building more connections between our main campus and our virtual learners, from clubs and enrichment to utilizing the technology we have to build and foster positive relationships; great things are ahead!
We also have some exciting news to share with you all in the not too distant future about an exciting opportunity coming to NAVS. It is too early to say much about it now, but stay tuned to future Norris News for updates.
