School Community Newsletter ~ 3/16/22
Hello, Parents and Guardians,
Spring break is just a few days away and our school spirit is in full swing! This week we are Packing the Piggies with coins and cash to help fundraise for Arlington Heights Council of PTAs Scholarships~ thank you for your generosity! We continue to celebrate the amazing accomplishment of our students as well:
- We hosted an all-school parade for our wrestlers that competed in the STATE Wrestling meet: Frank Tagoe, Tony Klikas, and Owen Pham and celebrated the success of our 8th Grade Girl's Volleyball Team Regional Champs!
- Our Science Olympians rocked the Regionals this past weekend as well.
- Several of our Wind Ensemble students submitted auditions to the "All-Illinois Junior Honor Band" and a record number of FIVE students were accepted! This is a state-wide competition and a huge honor for our students to be accepted. Congratulations to: Asad Chaudhry - Trumpet, Emilee Colton - Percussion, Kassandra Gonzalez - Alto Saxophone, Henry Ulrych - Clarinet, and Sophie Ulrych - French Horn. The AIJB festival is a two-day event, held Friday and Saturday, May 20-21 at the University of Illinois in Champaign.
- Our very own TMS spelling bee star, Grace Chen performed very well at the 12th Annual North Cook Spelling Bee. Although she was not a finalist she was successful up until Round 9! This is the furthest any of our D25 spellers have made it in this completion! Way to go Grace!
PARENT SUPPORT NEEDED PLEASE: Consistent daily attendance and on-time arrival are essential to student success! Homeroom is the time of day when students have an opportunity to focus on further developing executive functioning skills such as time management, materials management, decision making & problem-solving, in addition to taking a deeper dive into our social-emotional curriculum through Ruler lessons. Research shows that on-time arrival is critical to student success and gives them the ability to connect with peers, staff, and the school community at large. Students are able to further connect to school by learning about all the amazing opportunities that TMS offers.

SEL Mindful Moments for Parents
If your child can learn techniques to calm themselves when stressed, they can deal effectively with stress and intense emotions. It will also help them to focus their brains and perform optimally in their academic work. Teachers at Thomas are working on the same Mindful Moments in class, except that they are one week ahead of you. Take 20-30 seconds to do one of these calming techniques throughout the day and practice them before eating dinner, before going to sleep, etc.
SEL Focus of the Week - March 14-18 The focus of this week’s SEL mindful moments will be on using mindfulness to calm the body and brain.
SEL Focus of the Week- March 21-25 (Spring Break - Practice these techniques to enhance your relaxation over the break) The focus of next week’s SEL mindful moments will be on using the progressive body relaxation technique to calm the body and brain.
