"We exist so children can excel."

What We're Learning in Challenge

3rd & 4th Grade

Students have now reached the climax in The Great Gilly Hopkins. They've also been identifying the gradual shift in Gilly's character up to this point. This type of inferencing addresses the following Indiana Academic Standard:

  • "Describe a character, setting, or event in a story or play, drawing on specific details in the text, and how that impacts the plot."

We've also been practicing novel vocabulary (in context) with rousing games of bingo. The standard we meet during this type of bingo is:
  • Apply context clues (e.g., word, phrase, sentence, and paragraph clues) and text features to determine the meanings of unknown words."

5th & 6th Grade

Needless to say, the students have been enjoying Among the Hidden far more than they liked A House on Mango Street. One of several books in the Shadow Children sequence, Among the Hidden is a novel that most students simply couldn't put down. Both chilling and intelligent, the book has piqued the students' interest in totalitarian governments and various countries' population laws. As a result, they are knee deep in research of these compelling concepts.
