St. Baldrick's Shavees Must be Registered by March 8th!

For the third consecutive year, Washington will raise money via a head-shaving event to benefit The St. Baldrick's Foundation. The foundation funds more childhood cancer research grants than any other organization other than the U.S. government.

Our event will be March 20th at 2pm. Only Washington staff and students can register to be a shavee at this event, but parents are welcome to attend the assembly. Anyone can donate online. Students interested in being a shavee at the March 20th assembly should be signed up by Friday, March 8th on the Washington Baldrick's Event website. We will then send a Participant's Agreement home for parents to read and sign.

Washington families interested in donating can pledge a shavee or donate toward our event. All donations go to St. Baldrick's. Donate online here: Washington Baldrick's Donations.

We are honoring 3rd Grader Chase Ewoldt with our event. Thank you for your support!

Spotlight on SEL

Just as Illinois has state standards on all academic areas, there are also a set of social emotional learning (SEL) standards. This year we will shine a spotlight on all of the work our staff is doing to support students in the areas of self-awareness, growth mindset, self-management, interpersonal skills, and decision-making. You can read more about social emotional learning here: SEL. Thank you to 1st grade classes for making KINDNESS a focus of our PTA Pancake Breakfast this year! Students created placemats with messages of kindness and conversation hearts to spark table talk at the breakfast.

Pancake Breakfast - Thanks, PTA!

Thank you to Mr. Grant Rebro for organizing another fantastic PTA Pancake Breakfast! Thank you also to all of the parent and staff volunteers who made the event possible.

Staff News

We welcome Mrs. Megan Burke to our staff, filling the resource teaching position open due to the passing of Mrs. Mary Schlick. Mrs. Burke has a degree in special education and LBS1 licensure. She taught full time before having her children, and then owned a tutoring business for many years. Most recently, Mrs. Burke worked at Wheaton North High School as a teaching assistant and long-term substitute. In her free time, Mrs. Burke likes to read, bike and spend time with her husband and three children - a sophomore in college, junior in high school, and freshman in high school.

First Washington Family Fun Night of Learning a Success!

Thank you to all who attended our Family Fun Night on February 21st. 91 families and 294 total people attended the event! Families visited stations to play math games, do reading activities, learn about the importance of a good night's sleep, and have some fun with technology. Thank you to the PTA for supporting the event and providing desserts.

Knight Writers (and Speakers and Video Creators)!

As part of the CUSD 200 Vision 2022 teachers in all grades are focusing on developing students' skills in writing and message production (speaking, presenting, creating videos). We are also working to create opportunities for students to write and communicate with authentic audiences. Student writing and message production will be included in the Knightly News this year. Enjoy! Mrs. Miller's 2nd grade class interviewed Mrs. Craig and wrote her biography as a class informational writing project. They even included a table of contents, glossary, and illustrations with captions!
