Reading
With winter approaching, we began some winter themed stories. This week, we read Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson. In this story, the bear sleeps in his den while various other animals come in for shelter and begin to have a party without him. When he wakes up, he is sad, but they reassure him that they can make more food and celebrate with him. We continued working on predicting, retelling, and schema. We also read an informational book about brown bears. We learned facts about brown bears and wrote our own informational book on bears.
Math
We continued our measuring unit in math. We learned about the weight and length of objects. Students continued to describe objects based on their measurable attributes. They walked around the room finding objects and comparing them with a partner. They used the words taller than, shorter than, longer than, shorter than, heavier than, lighter than, and the same as to describe their object in relation to their partner's object.
Writing
We are continuing to build our sentence and even paragraph writing by adding more information to our journals. We have encouraged students to use multiple sentences in their journal writing. We also have noticed a lot of growth in our illustrations and use of sight words.
Social Studies
We are wrapping up our community unit. This week, we discussed the difference between a want and a need. Students are beginning to realize how fortunate they are because they have so much more than they really need to live. Although, we still cannot agree on whether a ipad is a want or a need... :) We also learned about ways that we can help and hurt our community. Many students came up with great ideas about how they can help in their own community!
