What's Happening in MI?
January 2016
This month we are finishing up Unit 2 of the curriculum by talking about gene therapy. The kids have been doing research the past two days on what is involved with gene therapy and tomorrow we will recap. We will move into a debate on whether the risks are worth the reward with gene therapy. This is a great transition into futuristic thinking of where gene therapy could work now for genetic disease but where do you draw the line before we get into the scenario of designer babies? From here we will move into reproductive technology and cloning. This is the conclusion of Unit 2.
Then we will switch things up a bit and move into the big lab in Unit 4. I have to rearrange some units to work around my maternity leave that will start mid-April. In this lab, we will be growing bacteria that produce a protein that makes them glow green, then isolate out the glowing protein, purify it and then check to see if we purified out just the protein we want and no extras with electrophoresis. This lab will take us into February.
As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns.
