WHERE IS THE TEMPLE OF POSEIDON LOCATED?
The Temple of Poseidon is located on Soúnio. This is also known as Cape Sounion. Cape Sounion has been well known as a sacred site since very ancient times. The "sanctuary of sunion" is first mentioned in the Odyssey, to be known as the place where Menelaus stopped while enduring his journey from Troy to bury his helmsmen, Phrontes Onetorides.
History & Details of the Temple
The Temple was constructed in about 440 B.C. It is dedicated to the God of the Sea, Poseidon. Originally there were 34 columns standing tall, but now there only remain 16. It is built of local marble from Arilesa. The columns were and are constructed of Doric. It is said that it looks gleaming light when viewed from the sea. This gave great comfort to many sailors in the ancient times. It is also thought to believe that the temple was built by Iktinos.
