Dear John Wetten Families,
I hope everyone is enjoying the longer days and somewhat warmer weather. It is hard to believe that May is already upon us!
As we head towards the end of the year, we like to keep students on track to help prepare them for their next grade level. Teachers are working hard to ensure that your student is prepared for the future. It is also a very busy time of year with state testing, field trips, and other activities.
Grades 3, 4, and 5 will be taking the Smarter Balanced state test the first three weeks in May. Please make sure your child is well rested and has a healthy breakfast to help ensure they do the best they can on the Smarter Balanced state test.
Many classes will be taking field trips during the month of May. If you would like to chaperone and join your student's field trip, you will need to become a volunteer. Please see the information below on how to become a volunteer at John Wetten.
I'm looking forward to May and all the exciting things that this month brings!
In Partnership,
Michael Clutter

IMPORTANT NEWS
Carnival Update
Book Fair, May 6 - 12
If you’d like to donate a book to your students' classroom library- watch for an email from your student's teacher for a link to create an ewallet for the teacher to shop for books. Or you can purchase a gift certificate at the fair.
You can create a Scholastic ewallet for your student so that they don’t need to bring money with them to school. There will be a record of your purchase at each cash register or you can print out a piece of paper with the ewallet information for your student. Click here for a video that explains the ewallet. Link to ewallet is here (available Friday, April 29)..
A book fair flier of some of the books at the fair will go home with students before the fair.
If you have any questions please contact Kim Burke at burkek@gladstone.k12.or.us
"THE LEOPARD PRIDE" PFO NEEDS YOU
JWE’s Community of Family and Faculty Joining Together for Student Enrichment
Hello! We are two parents who are beginners at PFO. We are in desperate need of some help to be able to continue our work. We are looking for parents/guardians who can volunteer for the variety of committees the PFO has. This year is almost to an end, but we would love to touch base with anyone this year to prepare for next year.
Are you interested in photography? We are looking for 1-2 people to work on the yearbook committee....Maybe you have a knack for writing, we are looking for someone to take over writing monthly blurbs for the school newsletter. There are many more activities and events that we need committees for.
Will you please join one or more of our committees:
- Yearbook
- Newsletter
- Jog-A-Thon
- Dance Party
- Staff Appreciation
- Literacy Carnival
None of these committees last all year (besides the newsletter)
We have broken events into committees in hopes that volunteer work can be spread out. You can absolutely be on more than one committee. We sincerely need some help, the PFO is such a fun way to be involved with the school.
To join a committee or the e-mail loop, write to JWEPFO@gmail.com and request to be added.
We wish you all a fantastic school year here at JWE!
Your PFO Board

Volunteers!
Here is the message shared from the Gladstone School District regarding volunteers!
Dear Gladstone Families,
Because COVID-19 rates remain low, the Gladstone School District will gradually add volunteer opportunities in our schools. We look forward to welcoming volunteers back this spring as occasional needs arise, from field trips to track meets.
Before you can volunteer, you must complete the annual application and have an approved background check. Here’s the volunteer application: https://www.helpcounterweb.com/welcome/apply.php?district=gladstone
School volunteers must submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination as part of their application. [Those who previously completed a volunteer application this school year need only submit their vaccine card.] If you have a gmail account, you can upload a copy of your vaccine card into the Google form: https://gladstonekids.com/Vaccine or check the appropriate box to request a vaccine exception. If you do not have a gmail account, take a photo of your card and send it to Theresa Schmidt at schmidtt@gladstone.k12.or.us.
Approved volunteers will be contacted by Volunteer Coordinator Theresa Schmidt. Those who will volunteer in schools must first complete in-person training. However, field trip chaperones and volunteers at athletic events do not need the training.
Thank you for supporting our schools. We will communicate volunteer needs as they arise.
Sincerely,
Jeremiah Patterson, Assistant Superintendent
Gladstone Schools

John Wetten kids take on Battle of the Books
Fifty fourth and fifth graders from John Wetten Elementary faced off this week, competing in the Oregon Battle of the Books. The statewide contest is an opportunity for students to read and answer questions about 16 different titles, including fiction, biography, non-fiction, and a graphic novel.
Eight teams competed, with imaginative names like the Fire Readers, the War Bees, and Unstoppable Frogs. All received an orange OBOB t-shirt for the event. The children also received many of the OBOB titles free, thanks to a grant from First Book of Oregon.
"My favorite book was Astrid the Unstoppable," said student Leonie Marlia. "It really inspired me." Fourth grader Saul Villarr added, "I liked Guts, because it was funny and I liked the characters."
"The best thing about this event is the camaraderie of reading and sharing books," said library assistant Kim Burke, who organized the event. "The kids read anywhere from 4 titles to all 16. The diverse options on this year's list encouraged them to branch out and explore different genres than they usually read."
End of Year Reminders
Medication Pick-Up: If your child has any medicine or cough drops in the office, please plan to pick them up before the last day of school. All leftover medicine will be discarded in accordance with district policy.
Lost and Found – Please have you student check the lost and found for missing articles of clothing before the end of the year. All left over items will be donated to the clothes closet or charity.
Dress Code – As the weather gets warmer, students need to remember the dress code policy. For specific details please refer to the Student Handbook.
After School Transportation Changes
This process is for student safety to document the change and who is making the request. We appreciate your cooperation.
