Our Neighborhood
December was a busy and shorter month of school in Room 14. We wrapped up learning about food and a variety of different holidays. Since returning from break we have jumped right into learning about our neighborhood. We've been learning about a variety of different jobs that people have including community helpers such as teacher, nurse, doctor, dentist, police officer, firefighter, bus driver, construction worker, etc. We have a visit from the fire department on Tuesday and an upcoming visit from the police department as well!
With our friends from Room 7, we played in our post office dramatic play area by writing letters to friends, putting letters in the mailbox, and sorting big and little boxes. We took turns extinguishing the fire as we pretended to be firefighters. We also took care of one another as we played doctor/nurse/veterinarian. We learn how to problem solve, get along with others, and many other important lifelong skills through play!
A few recent activities in art include making mouths with marshmallow teeth, painting a giant tooth with a toothbrush, ripping paper to make a stoplight, making a doctor kit as we discussed how doctors help us when we're sick, and making tool belts as we talked about all of the different tools community helpers use.
We continue to learn about letters, numbers, patterns, shapes, colors, concepts of print, and many other fun things! We also just introduced the Zones of Regulation into our Calm Corner area.
We're excited to welcome a new student, Matthew, to our class this week! I'll be sending out an updated classroom contact list soon.
