Message from PYLUSD re: Literature Review Committee

Hello PYLUSD Community,

In accordance with our core value of Innovation, the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District has a system through which a group of teachers can request that new, relevant books be approved for use in classrooms and be added to our Core and Extended Reading Lists. This process relies on another of our core values: Collaboration. Therefore, we would like to invite interested parents and guardians to join our 2023-2024 Literature Review Committee (LRC) as a part of this process.

The LRC members will have the responsibility of attending an onboarding meeting, reading an assigned book that has been requested for approval by a team of teachers, participating in a group debrief meeting, and providing their direct input to the Educational Services Department about the book. We have scheduled each of the four meetings for the school year to be one hour from 4 to 5 p.m. on October 24, November 30, February 15, and March 28. This feedback will then be presented to the district’s Board of Education and Curriculum Council to offer a clear understanding of community feedback as they consider approving their use in classrooms.

If you are interested in joining the LRC to read and give input about requested books, please fill out the Google Form found via this link by Tuesday, October 10. If we receive more applications than available openings, a random drawing from the pool of applicants will be used to determine participants.

Thank you for your consideration.

NOW HIRING!! Special Education Aides

Reflex Math

Students are going to have access to Reflex Math (via CLEVER), a program purchased by the district in order to provide students with the practice necessary to solidify their basic math skills and facts. It's designed for students 1st grade and beyond.

This is a really fun "gamified" program that students love using, which they will have access to at school and at home. They practice a "back to basics" curriculum and earn points that allow them to personalize their home page.

Teachers and parents will all be receiving an email from Reflex Math this week with instructions for how to set up classes and add students. More information to follow as it is made available!

Please Help Us With Attendance!

Remember that instruction begins at 7:50am. Supervision and free school breakfast are available starting at 7:25am, so we encourage you to plan your drop-off for between 7:30-7:40am each day.

*We averaged 93.0% attendance last week, which is an improvement from last week, thank you! We had a great Friday attendance which makes a big difference.

*We averaged 59 tardies each day last week; that is worse than last week, so please help us by getting to school on time. Remember, we serve breakfast at no cost to families every day!

**We need your help with tardies! We begin instruction AT 7:50am, so please arrive early enough for students to get all of their instructional minutes

New Student Enrollment

The new student enrollment date for the 2023-2024 school year will begin on February 14, 2023. Families may register their new student via the online portal here.

Parking Lot Reminders

Our number one priority is the safety of all Rio Vista students and families. Please use the crosswalk in the front parking lot, and only load or unload students in the valet line (do not drop off in the staff parking lanes).

Please do not walk in the wheelchair accessible area (marked by blue stripes) where we load students into the cars.

Also, please do not park along any red curb as that space needs to be available for emergency services in the case of an emergency. Please be courteous to our neighbors and do not park in front of anyone's driveway.

Make sure to remind your students to pay attention at the dismissal area. If we have to call them more than 3 times and they do not come to the loading zone, we will ask you to go back around in line and we'll try again.

Thank you for working together to keep everyone safe!

Please Contribute to our PTA!

Please consider making a $15 contribution to join our PTA. We always welcome your participation and volunteering, but that is NOT required to be a member of our PTA. My commitment to our community is that 100% of our teachers will also be contributing PTA members!

Every dollar Rio Vista receives from PTA dues goes directly to students in the form of field trips, supplies and materials for hands-on learning, and structural upgrades in classrooms such as new flexible seating furniture in the library and computer areas.
