POSITION DESCRIPTION: We are seeking a STEM education and/or informal education student interested in a Co-op program to round out their educational experience. Educational activities are facilitated by the Educational Programs and Outreach Department within Argonne. The mission of Educational Programs and Outreach is to connect world-class research to tomorrow’s STEM problem solvers.
This role supports the Education Outreach Team in research of science topics and teaching practices, delivery of science activities, and development of activity boxes for the Argonne in the Classroom Program.
The selected student will:
· Facilitate science activities at school and library STEMfests;
· Develop science activities within a collaborative team environment that can be taken into a classroom setting;
· Assist in training of staff to deliver activities;
· Participate in literature review on related science topics, science identity and best practices in teaching and learning
The prospective student is expected to have the following skills:
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills
· Ability to work in a dynamic team environment and manage multiple deadlines
· Ability to integrate key technology software into daily tasks (i.e. MS office, google docs/forms, online collaboration tools)
· Base knowledge of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
· Informal or formal teaching experience (preferred)
Requirements for the Co-op Program: Attend a Chicagoland area college/university; Grade point average of at least 2.8 on a 4.0 scale; U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident; enrolled full-time in a U.S. college or university. Laboratory policy requires that at the time of employment, prospective employees pass a physical examination, which includes drug and alcohol testing, performed by the Laboratory’s Medical Division at no cost to the prospective employees. A satisfactory background investigation is also required.
Compensation: The salary range starts at $14.00 per hour based on academic rank, academic discipline, and prior experience.
Hours: Students must commit at least one year of work, be available to work approximately 15 hours per week while classes are in session, and full-time during summer and academic breaks, with some adjustments for final exams or major academic project work.
