Gold was of high value even from the earliest records of it. The Egyptians developed gold smelting in about 3600 BC. Mesopotamia used the first gold for jewelry in 2600 BC. Tutankhamun’s funeral mask is known as one of the most stunning ancient gold work (made in around 1223 BC).
