FMS Counseling: Mrs. Burfield, Mrs. Horstmeier & Ms. Jo

Needing to see the school counselor?

Students needing to access the counselor's office can submit a form from their chrome books by clicking on the apps button. This form comes only to the counselor's. 6th graders will learn how to use this app on Tuesday, August 27th when counselors meet with them through their ELA classrooms. You can also ask your teacher for help. If you can't locate the form you can also shoot your school counselor an email. Obviously if there is an emergency, students will be sent to the Counselors Office immediately. This is just a great way to help students stay in the classroom for instruction time .

Here are a few ways you can reach out to us in the FMS Counseling Office:

Mrs. Horstmeier works with students with a last name starting with an A-J and can be reached at shorstmeier@fulton58.org and Mrs. Burfield works with students with a last name starting with a K-Z and can be reached at cburfield@fulton58.org.

Ms. Jo is the Counseling Office secretary and can be reached at jwilliamson@fulton58.org.

Counseling Office phone number is 573-590-8208

AFTER SCHOOL CHOIR IS ROCKING IT! We didn't have rehearsal this week due to Conferences. Can't wait to jump back in on Tuesday!

Music 6: Term 2 students have had a busy first week of Music! We took 2 pretests: Music Notation (notes/rests), and Singing. We also discussed emotion vocabulary to prepare for our H.O.P.E. playlist project.

This project began as a connection to social and emotional skills development. Students are encouraged to be able to identify a range of emotions in themselves and others. This can lead to a more productive classroom/school experience. By increasing empathy, we are likely to approach our peers with respect and kindness. H.O.P.E. is an acronym for Hold on. Pain ends.

Arts Alive: It is hard to believe that we are less than a month from our FIRST EVER show choir performance at FMS! Please make plans to join us at Cutlip Auditorium on William Woods campus on Wednesday, November 20th! Our performance will begin at 7pm, but performers will need to arrive earlier.

There is no fee to participate in this class. We will be buying t-shirts for the show choir this year. Students DO NOT have to purchase one, but MAY buy their shirt for $8. If the student brings $8, they will get to keep their shirt. If not, I will wash the shirts, and store them for next year!

Choir:WOW! Our first concert is on Monday! A Musical Mosaic will be presented on Monday, October 28th! It is at 7pm at Southside Baptist Church. Students will be expected to arrive earlier. More details soon! SINGERS SHOULD BE THERE BY 5:40pm!

CONCERT ATTIRE: khaki pants, black shoes, and a black choir polo shirt. If you do not have one, you may purchase one from me for $15. These polos are the same as those worn by FMS choirs for the past several years. Students may certainly borrow or buy one from a student who was in FMS choirs and no longer needs the polo.

Please feel free to contact me at any time: bmoebes@fulton58.org. For pictures and daily updates about Vocal Music at FMS, follow me on Twitter: @MoebesMusic

Mr. Thomas and Ms. Neudecker

Our Fall Concert is quickly approaching! It is next Tuesday, October 29, at 6:00 pm in the FMS Gym. Kids should be in their seats, ready to warm-up by 5:40. Dress for 6th and 7th grade bands is concert black (white is okay too). 8th graders will wear their band polos, khaki pants, and black shoes. This year, we'll feature a piece at the end of the concert with all three bands!

6th Grade Band: For those who haven't gotten a band book yet, we play out of Essential Elements for Band, Book 1. Please feel free to contact a director if you have any questions about what book to get.

6th Grade continues to become more comfortable with their first notes and how to make a sound.

7th Grade Band: The band is beginning preparations for their concert on October 29th. They have all of their music and we are beginning the refinement stage.

8th Grade Band: Those interested in being nominated for NEMO Jr. High Honor Band should work on the chair audition music posted on Google Classroom and let me know that they are interested. Next Wednesday, we'll take some time in class to work on that music more, but please don't delay! I've heard from a couple that they are interested. The band is a "paper" band, meaning I'll nominate up to 10 kids, based on a rubric, then the district committee will get together and select students who were nominated from each school in the Northeast District. On Saturday, January 18, those selected will travel with me to Macon for chair auditions and an afternoon rehearsal. On Saturday, February 15, Mr. Thomas will take those kids back to Macon for an all day rehearsal and a concert that evening. The Northeast District Jazz Band will perform as well.

Band Kids: KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!

Guitar Classes: Students are improving their technique and will be moving towards performing full songs soon.

Please consider following me on Twitter @MrT_FPSBands. I will be providing a daily playlist which your students will hear when they enter the room. You may also email me at chthomas@fulton58.org.

News from the Art Room

Hello! Just wanted to give a reminder that the end of the Quarter is this Thursday 10/15/19. I will be welcoming new 6th Graders on Friday! Looking forward to working with new faces, and getting to know this new group.

What We Are Doing

6th Grade

This week we are working on our Lego Portraits which is ELO 5: we will learn about ourselves and bring in popular culture when seeing art. We Will look and discuss pop art and art about culture now.

7th Grade Semester

Students have started our next objective: ELO 2 where students will analyze and evaluate art. Students in this unit will be looking at the Elements and Principles of Art and Design, and becoming an expert on at least one element or principle, by creating a mini poster. Students will work with a partner who will be also creating a mini poster on the corresponding element or principle. Students will share and talk about their work to gain an overall knowledge of the elements and principles.

8th Grade Semester

ELO4:Students will explain the connections between art and the world around them.

This unit we will look at a few different paintings but will focus on Grant Woods American Gothic. Students will learn about Grant Woods Painting, and create a parody or modern telling of this work. Coined as one of the most spoofed paintings in American Art, Grant Woods somber depiction of American Life was originally panned by critics but was later praised in its depiction.

Students will learn about the parts of a portrait and begin making steps in creating portraits to scale with adding a structure of a foreground, middle ground and background.

Students will begin work on our next ELO. ELO3 students will analyze and evaluate art by looking through medieval times. Students will draft and create a personal Coat of Arms. Students choose to paint this project as their medium so we will go through the process together and students will experiment with different techniques.

The FMS Thrive Hive

The Fulton Middle School Thrive Hive opened for business on Monday, August 21st. The store is open 7:25 to 7:45 each morning. If students aren't able to shop then they can email Mrs. Horstmeier @ shortmeier@fulton58.org or Mrs. Yates @ hyates@fulton58.org for an appointment to shop.

The Thrive Hive is designed to allow students to use their Hornet Bucks--earned through the Positive Behavior Support Program--to purchase items from the store. The Thrive Hive was created to help the needs of the FMS Student Community.

Items currently needed for the store are:

Any age appropriate toys, DVD's for the holidays.

As we gear up for winter: Hats, gloves, scarves, and coats.

Snack items: Nutella snack packs, Slim jims and pop tarts.

Other needs are ear buds and water bottles.

We will be gearing up for the holiday season so baskets to make gift packages for students to purchase would be great.

All other items are appreciated as well.

If you would like to donate, please call Fulton Middle School at 573-590-8200.

ALLERGY TO NUTS AND POPCORN

Please keep in mind that some students at FMS have an allergy to nuts, tree nuts and popcorn. Please be mindful of what food your child is bringing to school, and notice the signs throughout the school building. Thank you!
