Hallinan Elementary
Hawk Squawk Newsletter 5/25/23
Principal's Message
Dear Hallinan Families,
There are only 9 1/2 days left of the school year - which is shocking in itself..... And, so far, my weather app is forecasting beautiful days ahead, which I am very grateful for because we have a lot of extraordinary outdoor events at Hallinan in the upcoming days.
The mild weather is allowing us to make good use of the outdoors! The phenomenal Field Day will be returning on June 5th, 3rd Grade is holding Book Club in the Outdoor Classroom, students are having lunch and social time under the umbrellas in the garden and the PTO Garden Committee is planting with classes and exploring all the goodness of worms in our garden. In addition, District Nutrition Services is bringing a Farmers Market to Hallinan students on June 2nd. They'll bring local farm produce, including baby carrots, sugar peas, turnips, blueberries, blackberries and cauliflower, and serve it to students during recess. It's both educational and delicious!
I'd also like to share the Blacktop Presentation that a few of our amazing 4th graders put together. They saw a need, created a poll and created a brilliant and inspiring presentation to update and beautify the undercover blacktop areas. Please take a look at their ideas. If you would like to donate to this student led cause, you can do so by clicking on the Hallinan Art Auction website.
The Carnival and Art Auction are next Wednesday, May 31. It looks to be a lovely and fun evening. I hope to see you and your family there!

PTO Information
Hello Hallinan Families!
This is an exciting PTO blast! We suggest reading it all!
Slice of Gratitude
We really need to thank our creative and thoughtful carnival team Kim Borcherding, Isabela Demonte & Stephanie Edmonson. They have planned such an awesome event and are excited to share it with all of you.
An Extra Slice of Gratitude
This year, we are rolling out a very exciting new carnival sponsorship program. All of our sponsors are Hallinan parents! These sponsors paid for most of our carnival activities. So not only does their generosity mean that the carnival is going to be EXCITING for our kids (and safe because we will have bouncy houses for younger and older kids) but it also frees up some funds for the PTO to make a very important end-of-year purchase. Because of our sponsors, the STEM lab is receiving new and needed robotic equipment that kids as young as kindergarten can use! WOW!
If you see our sponsors listed below please tell them thank you. And better yet, please refer to their local businesses! The strength of these local businesses directly impacts the vitality of our school!
Chris & Annica Werner: Iron Mountain Wealth Management: https://www.ironmountainwm.com/
Pam Waldman: Waldman & James Realty Group: https://waldmanrealtygroup.com/
The Werner Family: As personal sponsors too! So sweet!

Gratitude for 5th-grade kids
Thanks to the fifth-grade kids' fundraising efforts, we were able to put dollars back into the PTO budget! Working with the fifth-grade celebration team, these kids raised enough money to buy one of our amazing new garden picnic tables as their legacy gift! Let's celebrate these kids!
Carnival
We are so excited to have our annual Hallinan Spring Carnival on Wednesday, May 31st from 5-8pm and hope you can make it! We will have a lot for families to enjoy including a dunk tank, bounce house, inflatable obstacle course, face painting, games and more! Food trucks will have food for purchase and though this event is free, we are suggesting a $10 per family donation that can be made at the entrance with cash, a website link: https://hallinan-elementary-pto.square.site/spring-carnival or through (Shelby Setter's) Venmo - see to the right. Please note it is for the carnival donated entrance fee.
This year we are also partnering with the Art Auction committee and will be displaying the incredible class art the children have created in the gymnasium.

Art Auction
New Art Auction Ask:
In the continued celebration of our kids, let's also thank our fourth graders. Working with Ms.E, the fourth graders just gave the PTO a thoughtful presentation on needed playground updates. Did you know that playground games like hopscotch cross over directly to in-class learning abilities? In addition to needing to update blacktop games and paint, the fourth graders presented their idea for bringing more art to Hallinan in the form of a gorgeous mural. Not only will the mural brighten the space for all Hallinan kids but the mural will include hidden objects that help educators redirect hurt emotions.
The picture here is an example, kids will be giving input and finalizing the design. We are trying to accomplish a single panel in the 2023-2034 school year. The project can expand in other years. If we do not receive enough funds from this single fundraising event, we will earmark funds for this project and accomplish fundraising at another date. But our goal is to get in and raise this money. Letting the fourth graders see how their hard work directly impacts all the kids --and adults-- at Hallinan.

May Nurse News
Asthma/Allergy Medications at School
It is critical to the health and safety of your student to bring ALL doctor recommended medications to school. Over the summer, speak with your doctor to get the proper supplies for school and then go to the LOSD web page to find the proper forms to be completed with the medications. If your student is in Elementary or Secondary and will store their meds at school, watch for a medication drop off time for your particular school. If they are in secondary and keeping their medication in their possession, please submit the proper paperwork so we are aware of where to find their medication in case of an emergency.
Individualized Health Plan? - Watch for an Email
If your child has a LOSD Individualized Health Plan (IHP) developed in consultation with your District Nurse, please watch for an email! Your response is needed to confirm or update your student's plan. We appreciate your prompt response.
Immunizations
Please review the OHA requirements and information on required immunizations for students. Please make arrangements to complete immunizations and update Synergy over the summer to avoid exclusion in 2024.
If you would like to speak to your school nurse, click the link below for contact information.
Changes to COVID-19 Response
The Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority has updated requirements for school districts' communicable disease management planning for the 2023-24 school year. Included are the following changes to our COVID-19 response:
Effective May 11:
Several sources of COVID-19 data ended. We will archive our dashboard and CDC Community Level metrics shared in our newsletter, website, and school signage.
A five-day period of isolation for those infected with COVID-19 is no longer recommended for the general population, including people in K-12 education settings. Our schools will continue to follow the recommendation for students and staff to stay home until fever free for 24 hours and symptoms improve.
Effective June 17:
The COVID-19 vaccination requirement for public and private school teachers, staff, and school volunteers (OAR 333-019-1030) will be lifted. That means that after June 16, teachers, school staff, and school volunteers will no longer have to provide proof of vaccination or have a valid medical or religious exception on file to be in direct or indirect contact with students.
