News From Our 5th Grade Classroom 9/4/15
What's Happening in the Classroom
Notes from the Teacher
The permission slip for Taltree was sent out earlier this week. Please return the form and $3 cash to school with your child by 9/11.
We will begin spelling this week. Here is a link that students can use to make online word searches as part of the spelling contract each week. If your child receives a 100% on the pre-test Tuesday, he/she does not have to complete homework or take the test on Friday.
Students took the pre-test for Think Through Math. This is a wonderful program that you can use at home to boost math skills. Their username is their school number and the password is their 5 letter combo.
I have finished grading the Social Studies test online. You and your child can view their results through their Canvas account (same username and password as Think Through Math).
PTA sponsors our annual Camp Tecumseh overnight trip in May. In order to be a chaperone on this trip you MUST volunteer for popcorn parking. You can email the PTA from the school's website to sign up for this event.
Information about the Color Run was sent home today. The date for this is October 10th. This is fundraiser for this school year. I will be volunteering to help at this event.
Below are the Guidelines for students to qualify for Super Citizen Awards:

In math, we will continue Unit 1. We will work on prime factorization and mean/median/mode.
In Writing, we will start our Memoirs unit. We will begin by reading some examples and brainstorming a memoir we can write in class. We will also start Language Arts Unit 1-Nouns.
In Reading, we will begin with a novel study. Your child will be reading a novel on his/her reading level and completing a different role sheet each night based off the chapter/page number to read. We will discuss their sheets the next in class in small groups. We will also begin with Unit 1 in Benchmark Reading-Main Idea/Detail and Asking Questions.
We will start Unit 2-Native Peoples of North America. We will intro the unit on Monday, and for homework that night, your child will read part of the first lesson and complete in questions/activities on those pages. In class the next day, we will review how to work in groups and students will discuss their answers in small group. (the flipped model)
During Success Time, we are going to be creating scarecrows based off a picture book. The link for the activity is located below. Students will need to bring in items to make this scarecrow.
