A Note From Mrs. Looman

  • Sometime in the next few weeks we'll be having an unannounced lockdown drill. This will be during a transition time so that we can practice what to do when we're moving about the building. This is part of our regular safety drill cycle. If you happen to be in the building when it occurs, please follow the direction of staff and you will be released just as soon as the drill is complete.
  • Next Wednesday, 5/3 from 5:30-7pm there will be an in-person Internet Safety training for parents at the Swift River School in New Salem. Dinner and childcare are provided! Registration is required. This is open to anyone who wants to know more about the on-line risks our kids are facing and how to help keep them safe from predators. Please see the flyer below for more information.

The following tips from Reading Tips for Parents can be found in its entirety at Reading Tips for Parents. Parents and caregivers are typically the first folks that set the tone for how students feel about reading. The article offers up suggestions from babies to supporting students with reading as they advance in school.

So… what can you do to encourage reading at home?

  • Create a quiet, special place in your home for your child to read, write and draw. Keep books and other reading materials where your child can easily reach them.

  • Let your child know you think reading is important by reading together; either at the same time with different material or the same material.

So… how can you help your child become a strong reader?

  • Talk about new words your child may not understand or know to build vocabulary.

  • If the book has pictures talk about them; if it is a pictureless book talk about the images or pictures that are created when reading.
