2016 - 2017 MGSD Student Calendar

Click here for a copy of the 2016 - 2017 Student Calendar and see below for important changes to the school days next year.

There will be a few changes to our school day in 2016 - 2017. Per Senate Bill 187, Section 7A.11 school calendars must meet the following requirements (abbreviated list):

1. Start date no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26 and end date no later than the Friday closest to June 11.
2. Must have a minimum of 185 days OR 1,025 hours of instruction.

Since August 26, 2016, occurs on a Friday, it is closer to Monday, August 29, which is a full week later than our normal start date. The calendar committee determined that a plausible solution would be to extend the school day by six (6) minutes thereby allowing for the necessary hours and potential inclement weather days.

The intermediate/middle/high school schedules would extend the day an additional 6 minutes. The elementary level would begin ten (10) minutes earlier, lunch periods would be reduced by one (1) minute, and would they would release five (5) minutes earlier. The linked calendar above will indicate the new start and/or release times.

The attached 177 day calendar allows MGSD to end the year for students during the second week of June, which is similar to past calendars. Furthermore, the approved 177 extended day calendar allows for 1060 hours of instruction, which continues to allow makeup flexibility for 5.5 inclement weather days.

This calendar was approved the Board of Education on January 12, 2016, after a recommendation by the Calendar Committee, which is made up of parents, teachers, and administrators. If you have any questions, please contact Todd Black, (704) 658-2572, or Tanae McLean (704) 658-2543,
