Mrs. Cohen's First Grade News

December 2014

It was nice to get to know all of you a little bit better and discuss your child's progress in first grade during conferences. I still have a few conferences to make up in the next week or so from the snow, but all-in-all they went very nicely. I hope that everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving! We are in the home stretch of 2014 and we will be VERY BUSY this month!

12/4 Holiday Shop @12:45

12/5 Pretzel Day

12/10 Book Orders DUE

12/11 Gingerbread Houses @9:30-10:30

12/17 Spirit Day - TBA

12/23 All-School Holiday Sing and Winter Parties

12/24-1/2 School CLOSED

If you would like to order books through the book order that you want to keep secret from your child, please send me an email once your order is placed and I will be sure to contact you when they arrive. Most parents like picking up the package from the office.

We are half way through Theme 3 in our second anthology. We will be testing before the winter break. Please make sure that your child is practicing the high frequency words daily. These words appear frequently in the books that your child reads and in most cases cannot be sounded out.

I will be assessing the home reader levels during the first week of December.

This month, we will be working on Unit 4 in our Everyday Math program. Please refer to the Family Home Link for important vocabulary, homework help, etc. Please take advantage of the website! Information was given out at conferences. The children do go on daily at school but the extra practice will only benefit your child as we begin to assess the children's math facts in the coming months.

We will focus on gaining a better understanding of the holidays that are celebrated in December. We will focus on Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa. I put out a few dreidels for the children to play with during free time. I also set up a small Christmas tree. In years past, I have allowed the children to bring in an ornament to place on the tree. Feel free to do so; however, please make sure that it is not too valuable or breakable. These will be sent home before winter break.

At this time, I would like to wish all of you a heartfelt Happy Holiday! Enjoy the time off with your child(ren). Have a safe, healthy and Happy New Year!

School will re-open on Thursday, January 5, 2015.
