From the Principal's Desk
Greetings from CSE,
This past week we were able to experience a full week of CSE students! You may have noticed at this point that your kids are beginning to get into a routine. You may also notice that they were extra tired this week.
New Transitions are always hard on students. They have a new classroom, new schedule, new academic expectations, new friends and a new teacher. All this "Newness" demands some counter measures.
The best approach to keep your kids safe, strong and mindful is to provide structure and routines for them to succeed. Kids thrive on knowing the limits and expectations. Our job as adults is to provide this for them. Here are some easy areas to provide routines in making their day-to-day life more manageable and secure. This Child Mind Institute Article highlights these areas in getting past the Back -T0-School Jitters. Focus on:
- Validation
- Morning Routines
- Homework
- Bedtime
Don't forget to Read with your child before bed each night! Set a comfy, cozy routine that makes them feel safe and secure! What a great feeling right before bed!
Here's to another great #CSESTRONG week at CSE!
Sincerely,
Dr. Eric Skanson

5th Grade Kindness Retreat
CSE Parents and Community,
Our school believes that to do well in school, students need to feel physically and emotionally safe. In this effort to create a safe and caring culture, we are having a Youth Frontiers Kindness Retreat®. This year we are exceptional thrilled to be pairing with Discovery Elementary in Waite Park for a joint Kindness Retreat. Half of our ROCORI 5th Grade will be traveling to Discovery Elementary and half of the Discovery Elementary 5th Grade Students will be coming to Cold Spring. This is made possible through an Achievement and Integration Grant.
Since 1987, Youth Frontiers (YF) – a nonpartisan, nonpro t organization based in Minneapolis – has been facilitating retreats to build positive school communities that help young people realize the importance
of respecting themselves and others. Their vision is to change the way young people treat each other in every hallway, lunch line and classroom of every school in America so that today’s young people make tomorrow’s world better. Last year, YF worked with more than 127,000 students and educators throughout the country. On the Kindness Retreat, the YF Retreat Staff will focus on creating a more positive school community by engaging students in a variety of activities that build students’ empathy skills and teach safe ways to help prevent bullying and unkind behaviors.
This high-energy, interactive retreat is scheduled for October 10th for the 5th grade class and will be held at BOTH DISCOVERY ELEMENTARY AND COLD SPRING ELEMENTARY.
To continue the positive effects of the retreat experience, we believe it’s important for the entire community to be involved in supporting and communicating the messages delivered on the retreat. Because of this, we encourage parents and caregivers to inquire about the retreat experience once the student returns home by asking the following questions:
1. What activities did you find fun?
2. What were the small-group leaders like?
3. What were some of the unkind actions going on at school that you discussed? 4. Have you been affected by the unkind actions?
5. Did you talk about how you as a class can work on that?
6. What was the most important thing you learned?
7. What is one thing you can do tomorrow at school to show kindness?
Visit youthfrontiers.org/kindness-retreat for more information on Youth Frontiers and to watch a video about the Kindness Retreat.
